Hands on Elder’s Scrolls III: Morrowind
« on: March 14, 2002, 11:06:09 AM »
This is a Teamxbox hands on review.  Sounds good. :D

Have you ever played a game where you found yourself lost or wandering around aimlessly in search of where to go next? Many of us have experienced that frustrating feeling of despair, which usually leads to seeking out the help of a friend or a hint book. In this case, wandering around aimlessly to explore your surroundings isn’t just a major part of the game, it’s actually encouraged. The Elder’s Scrolls III: Morrowind isn’t a game that is about going from Point A to Point B. Morrowind is more like a game about going from Point A to Point B, to Sub-Point B, back to Point A, then to Point who knows where and everywhere in between! Along the way you will meet up with tons of characters of which you can interact with to influence the entire game itself. Your interactions with the environment and other characters will have a direct impact on your character’s development and persona. There is no right or wrong way to play the game, which is the best feature of this first-person, wide open RPG from Bethesda Software Inc.

The Elder’s Scrolls III: Morrowind is the third chapter in an award-winning epic series of RPGs that presents players with the most expansive game to date. Morrowind takes place in the most detailed virtual world ever created where players will have the opportunity to create and play any type of character they can imagine. Unique choices that you make through conversations and interactions with characters will determine your personality, skills and abilities as well as how other characters you will interact with you in the future. You may choose to play as a noble hero on a glorious quest, or a murderous thief aspiring to rise to the top of his guild. Perhaps you find the role of a magical sorcerer in seek of the ultimate spell more appealing. It is completely up to you and the possibilities are so open that you may never be able to experience everything this game has to offer. If you choose to confront the assassins’ guild, they will more than likely take a contract out on you. Should you choose to impress them instead, they may try to recruit you. Morrowind is a game that demands your wits and skills at all times because no choice is a small choice. Each choice you make will determine what lies ahead.

Exploration is the key to the Morrowind environment and you can decide just how much time you will spend exploring the world around you. You can choose to follow the main storyline, or you can broaden your adventure by exploring the giant province of Morrowind and all of its inhabitants in the many exotic locations you will come across. Each city and village you may find possesses its own unique look and feel with hundreds of quests to embark upon. You will never experience the same saga twice.

Having played The Elder’s Scrolls III: Morrowind for the first time, I was amazed at just how well Bethesda actually pulled off such a grand RPG. Almost every turn you make has some sort of influence on the gameplay. As soon as the game starts out you will be questioned. Your responses will set the foundation for which your character will build upon. You will start off exploring the building around you and may may choose to take a few objects within the house you find yourself in. What if you take too much? Will you pay for it later? Will you get away with it? Will any of these objects found here help you later? Time will tell and you have no way of knowing what will happen so make your decisions wisely. Morrowind is a game that you won’t find any walkthroughs for because each player will truly live out a different experience.

Without a doubt, Morrowind is by far the most advanced game of The Elder Scrolls series. With an unparalleled character system and a much more detailed world to explore, Morrowind takes advantage of the latest in 3D technology featuring realistic textures and polygon counts, real-time shadows, landscapes, skeletal based animation, and a complete weather system. Yes weather, so make sure you prepare yourself to deal with mother nature as well. Characters will reach as many as 5,000 polygons each, helping boost the graphics of Morrowind right up there with the best first-person games available.

One of the most interesting aspects of the game is the ability to become involved with various factions and groups you may discover. These include the three major houses that govern the province of Morrowind, and the ‘trade’guilds such as the Thieves Guild, the Mages Guild, and the Fighters Guild. Players will not only have the chance to join these guilds, they will also be able to rise up within the ranks of these groups while improving their skills and traits. This gives you a chance to experience many sub-stories within the game that co-exist with the main storyline of the game.

The Elder’s Scrolls III: Morrowind is a first of its kind and the first true RPG released for the Xbox that is certain to set a standard that future RPGs will measure up to. With stunningly detailed graphics and interesting characters set in one of the largest virtual worlds created for a video game, Morrowind is ready for gamers everywhere. The question is: Are you ready for Morrowind? Seemingly insignificant actions may later prove to be the turning point for your downfall or the impetus behind your glory (Used my thesaurus that I got from Bart for Christmas for that one). I could go on and on about the depth and interactivity of this amazing game, but that would still only begin to touch the level of detail this game embodies. Morrowind is a game that you have to play to understand and no two gamers will share the same experience.

A definite killer title, though I wonder about its appeal to console gamers in general. Graphics are plenty good for this type of game.

pstwo, is it your style, a must buy for you?

Actually, if you actually went and read their reviews you\'d find that they very often post LOWER scores than either Gamespot and IGN (or usually within .2 or .3).  So unless you think the xbox is getting short changed, and knowing you that is not the case, I think you should actually stop and think and perhaps you\'d realize that you, like many here, prefer to speak out of your ass.

Never speak the name of that attrocity again.

Morrowwind looks good from what I\'ve heard about the gameplay. Graphics are a bit under my expectations, (What\'s with the white haze everywhere?) but those could just be poor screenshots. I\'ll look into this title more when I get my Xbox.
