Another Essay... check it!
« on: March 16, 2002, 10:39:41 AM »
I got a VERY GOOD calification in the last essay thanks to Videoholic and Project. Now, here you are the latest one that I have to send tomorrow evening. If you can help, do it. Your help is very well received. (you know, check the mistakes, rewirite, expressions, vocabulary, blabla... ). Here you are:

The Nokia 5210

Technology advances everyday and mobile phones are not an exception. The increment of this device among the people in the last five or six years has provoked that companies develop a great amount of patterns in order to satisfy the demand of society. The first generation of mobile phones was the beginning of a big expansion around the world. We are living now the second one, next to the end, where phones are almost tiny personal computers. We can buy mobile phones with Internet connection, digital cameras and lowly built-in games. It seems that the ability of talking is not very important nowadays in mobile phones, perhaps it is thus because teenagers worry about multimedia features over their main function: to speak.

I have also got a mobile phone. The model is a Nokia 3210, but it is a bit old now indeed. I would like to talk about my father’s one; his phone is a Nokia too, even it is very recent. The pattern is a GSM Nokia 5210, which has just been released in Spain. This model is an “evolution” of Nokia 8210 and its main features are:

Measurements: 105.5 x 47.5 x 22.5 mm.;
Total weight: 92 grams (battery included);
Built-in rubber shells that make the telephone more resistant to shocks and spills. (Really good telephone for construction sites or extreme sports);
Wap browser in version 1.1 with a Wap Push function for receiving desired information from the web. (As the phone is not GPRS, the navigation speed stops at 14,400 bps);
Possibility to time the mode, or set the activation of the mode (Silent, Meeting, Outside, etc.) for a determined time. For example, if you go to a meeting that lasts about an hour, you can set the Meeting mode for the duration of the meeting, so that at the end of the meeting you will not forget, as usual, to reset it to normal mode;
Thermometer function, which allows you to measure the external temperature;
Animated and non-animated screen savers (16 different types);
Customisable vibration setting which can be set alone, with the ring tone or before the ring tone;
Chronometer and countdown;
SMS length of 450 characters (plus SMS chat);
Picture editor that allow the user to create drawings from zero or to modify existing drawings in order to attach them to SMS or set as screen savers;
Date, alarm clock and time;
Agenda containing up to 100 appointments, birthdays and various notes. You can also use icons to personalise the notes;
Telephone book with an internal memory of 250 numbers (aside from those available on the SIM card);
Voice Dial, to call up to 10 numbers vocally;
Calculator and exchange function;
5 personalisable user modes;
35 predefined ring tones, plus other 7 that you can download via SMS;
Updateable T9 for easy SMS writing;
IrDA infrared port for wireless communication;
5 built-in games: Snake II, Pairs II, Bantumi, Space Impact, and Bumper;
Battery charger included (model 789-K).

The telephone is parsimonious, it consumes little. It easily lasts over 100 hours in standby; with mixed usage (standby and a few calls) four/five working days are available without problems. The user interface is simple and intuitive and the audio quality is good but not excellent due to, mainly, the integrated antenna. Nokia 5210 is a good GSM mobile phone, solid and robust, with reliable software.

Perhaps, my father’s mobile phone is so expensive for the public that it is aimed at. He paid for the phone about €300, an high quantity for young people. Anyway, the price is not abusive because the nice features of the device. I want to purchase a new Third Generation mobile phone, scheduled, according to manufacturers, for Fall 2002. With these new phones, people will be able to watch the television through the screen or transmitting data at high speeds.

We do not know where the mobile phones will arrive at, but I am pretty sure that they are going to open a new digital era, where mobile phones will not be only phones; they will be a true entire entertainment world.
Todas estas cosas se perderán en el tiempo como lágrimas en la lluvia.

I didnt do any specific critiques, but i thought it was pretty good just:

Do you really need all the specs?  People get bored reading that stuff.

It is best not to use the first person tense when formally writing.  That means no "you" no "I" no "we".

Sorry that I was unable to help out with your essay. You would be better off getting the rough draft to me as soon as possible rather than the day before. I have been very busy lately and I just saw your post today. Better luck next time friend.:D
