The bodies of the players in counter-strike are divided up into polygonal boxes referred to as hit boxes. In each box, damage is dished out differently. A leg shot won\'t take off nearly as much as a body shot, and a headshot, depending on what gun you are shot with, is a very strong hit that takes off 50 health to 100 health killing you. The hit box sizes have been rumored to be incredibly high, but I don\'t feel it is. I think the cause of so many headshots is the randomness of the gun shots rather than the actual boxes themselves.
