The Future of Consoles
« on: March 28, 2002, 07:45:06 AM »
Well, 2000-2001 marked a unqiue era in modern consoles. Who would have ever thought Microsoft would invade another market and develop their infamous X-box? The redicilous size with an X ingraved into the design was by far the most un-unique.

But Microsoft wasn\'t the only suprise the community learned. Nintendo\'s GameCube aka Lamecube, Lunchbox had a very wierd design. As mentioned above, it\'s shape made the media point and laugh at Nintendo once again. But they did do something right. They made their console compact in size, and the overall design was far superior to Microsoft\'s X-box. Perhaps an insight into the future for future consoles?

And we have now the mid-aged PS2 from Sony. Design was exceptional taking the sleek looking approach. Concidering you can have it either stationed horizonatally or vertically was a little innovative.

What will the future hold for future consoles? Will we be seeing wireless controllers? Will harddrives be incorporated more? Will DVD be here in the next console era? Perhaps with DVD-RW compatibility to save games, thus phasing out the need for memory cards? Will internet be the new standard for the majority of today\'s new games?

What would you see being the new thing in the next era?
You think positive, I\'ll think realistic.

The lunch-box stereotype again.. yay.

What will the future hold for future consoles?

More powerful hardware.

Will we be seeing wireless controllers?

June 24th, 2002.

Will harddrives be incorporated more?

I sure hope so. That would save us a lot of money on memory cards, and help graphics rendering. (caching)

Will DVD be here in the next console era? Perhaps with DVD-RW compatibility to save games, thus phasing out the need for memory cards?

Maybe, maybe not. There\'s some new technology out that allows terabytes to be stored on DVD/CD-sized discs.. and for cheap. You can probably bet on Nintendo going with a 3" disc again if this happens.. not a bad thing. (I love the loading times on GCN.. or lack thereof)

Will internet be the new standard for the majority of today\'s new games?

Those with multiplayer capabilities.. yeah. Single-player will always be around though.

I would like to see wireless controllers standard, 4 controllers standard, hard drive standard, mem cards not required, but used for transportation of files.

I would also like to see that technology of things being saved to crystals. Remember that technology was discovered sometime around Sept/Oct of 2001? Who was it that found it? Maxtor? If this holds true, I heard like 1/2 inch holds 40GB? Probally not accurate, but I heard the size:storage ratio is far superior to regular platters.

And also, the power would significantly be lower to power it.

The only draw backs to wireless controllers would be battery life and the fact that if you have a messy living space, you can easily loose them

I wouldn\'t consider that reveloutionary. Anyone who owns a PSX from the first 2 years of production knows where they got that idea. Mine\'s been set vertical for 2 years now. That\'s the only way you can get it to play a damned game.

Sonyfan, I meant it as a promotional gimmick, not something revoultinary.

This topic isn\'t meant to discuss the future of games nor graphics. This is exclusive to the design of them and what we can expect.

First off, I\'d like to call Cloud345 a goofball.

Hey Cloud345, you\'re a goofball!

Now then..

jm: IMO, the changes in design are going to flow in this direction: games that can be played many ways. Games that aren\'t very restricted by level-to-level play.. and don\'t have an absolutely straight path of gameplay.

Game industry icons like Miyamoto and Molyneux share this philosophy on games. Miyamoto\'s Pikmin and Molyneux\'s Project Ego are great examples of games that have structure.. yet you\'re not directly restricted by having to reach the next level. You can do things in the game one way, while your friend might do them another way.

Why am I a goofball? The size I accually love the size of the GC its just may be a better marketing decision because some people may think its a little to cute for mature gaming. The color is for the same reason. The disc size is for more time on each disc. The better gaming selection is because right now there are very few games that catch my interest. In the future there will be better.

I can see where you\'re coming from with this.. but it doesn\'t any sense. Bigger is better? So a VCR sized console is the way to go, right? ... I myself think that the GCN\'s size is great, but the PS2 prolly edges it out overall; longer but flat. Flat is good.

The color is for the same reason.

People are way too uptight about this stuff. A real gamer doesn\'t care about the color of the damned system. Anyways, the GameCube is available in a sleek black form too.. you\'re suggesting that they limit the public\'s choices? "You have to buy the black one." Now that\'s bad marketing!

Quote
The disc size is for more time on each disc.

A. The GCN disc cuts loading times in comparison to PS2. But wait.. the PSX got you used to waiting around.. ;)
B. The GCN disc is virtually unpiratable, unlike PS2\'s DVD format.
C. The GCN disc is cheaper to manufacturer than a DVD.

That\'s a preference thing, I can\'t argue with ya there. Although, if you look at the piles and piles and piles of announcements made in the past 6 months concerning GameCube development.. you\'ll see that the future isn\'t only bright for the GameCube, it\'s very bright.

Now.. back on topic..

Jm: I think that saving games via DVD-RW or even CD-RW isn\'t going to happen next generation. I\'d go as far to say that it might never happen with the DVD/CD formats. Think about it.

I stand corrected.

Hehe, yeah. So you must see a "better" future for Nintendo\'s console then.. right? ;)

Whatever. I just hate when I hear stuff like that..

If you think that the design of the GameCube is alright, then why wouldn\'t somebody else? It\'s only high school kids and a few sensitive Xbox-owners that seem to hate the design of GameCube regardless of color. Why is a handle a bad thing? It makes it far easier to transport than any other console.
