My most likely unapreciated view of SOE
« on: March 31, 2002, 02:40:45 PM »
Im in Dallas for a couple of days so I picked the game up at Gamestop. Although fun the game was way overly hyped.  I put this in another relatively new forum so excuse the fact that I talked about the modes because Im sure ya know about them. Let me also remind you I have not gotten to much into the game yet so Im sure I have left alot of important things out and this is in no way intended to be a profesional outlook on the game. I just threw a bunch of opinions togeather at random of the game. Anyhoo, Im ready for any flames I might get for this.

Gameplay- The gameplay was not at all what I had expected it to be, and no I did not expect it to be some kind of GTA3 game. I started on Chaos mode where you run around in a certain amount of time and try and complete missions. You start out in the mall and you can earn points for basically destroying property. Kill a citizen and thats a penalty. If you kill a policeman or a gang member you can pick up little life icons for a little extra health or their weapon. I havent gotten to far in Chaos but what I have picked up so far is that you try and complete objectives with in a given time.

Revolution I have managed to get into that mode a little more and spend some more time on it. Revolution is kinda like a story mode for the game. You run across gang members and such and they send you on missions to complete. Some of these missions you have to get done quick as say if your chasing down someone on the run. As soon as your done with one mission you go straight to the next which is a really nice touch to add.

Anyway, now that Im done talking about the two different modes it\'s down to the grit and grind. Firstly I expected to see other rioters actually going after eachother and trying to kill one another than just running around like a bunch of panzees screaming. Why is it when I hit someone with a bat they dont have the balls to stand up to me but rather run off, makes it to easy to pick on pedestrians. Thats all you see when you enter the first mission is a bunch of people just basically running around and holding things wich brings me to my next point. If they\'re gonna be running around with stero\'s and tv\'s in thier hands let\'s see them actually take this stuff from inside shop windows. Basically the only true rioter is you..they just added a bunch off people running around to add to the game. Nextly, you never see any of these people get chased down or attacked by the cops. They could run bye with massive weapons in thier hands and the cops just stand thier and watch as they run by. On the other hand if I run bye with a bat in my hand thier hot on my tail. Now why is it that I have to be the only bad guy in the game? And what about the guy\'s that send you on missions..u know the ones just standing around like nothing is going on and yet they manage to stay completely safe and out of harms way. Your only real line of defense in the game is with your own bare hands. You pick up a gun and you just get yourself into more trouble. Why is this you ask...Well first you cant lock on a paticallar person and pull the trigger. U just gotta start firing, let the bullets fly and hope that you hit someone. The best way I found to do this is just run straight and then turn around and start firing because if you are aproached to close then they got you. The best aspect of the gameplay I found was the missions and they seem to even get a little repetive. So basically what it comes down to is poor AI

Graphics- Graphics are fair but defintally not great. If you follow Rockstargames you\'ll realise that none of thier games ever seem to have decent graphics anyways. The people running around all look the same except that one might have a goatee or the other is fat, thier is not a big diversity of people in the game at all. They basically all look the same. Whats lamer, is how the pigs (a.k.a. cops) look. If any of ya have ever played Jet Set Radio then you\'ll understand what I mean. Overall Graphics are fair but nothing to write home about.

Sound-Sound is just god awful. Atleast in GTA3 people had more to say then just ahhh! It gets really annoying really fast listening to the screams of thousands of people running around. Cops are no different, just stop! or ur under arrest, just a bunch of crap like that really makes the sound quality of the game go down a bit. When firing weapons it doesnt sound the least bit realistic. Sounds more like your firing a bb gun of some sort. The explosions are alright and the sound of breaking glass is about the only realistic sound in the game. Anyhoo, sound is problly the worst aspect of the game in my honest opinion.

Overall I\'d give the game a 5 which will stand for average. The game was way overly hyped but I should of know this the minute I was pulling it off the sales rack. The only reason I give it an average rating is because for some reason I still keep bringing myself back to play the game but only with maybe 5 minute intervals.

If Im leaving anything out, please fill me in, because Im sure there are alot of ya here that have had the game for a while and can give a better outlook on it.

I think many people agree with your statements. People were expecting so much from the guys that brought us GTA3, but SOE turned out to be pretty bad...not horrible, but not worth buying. I\'d give it a 4.5/10.:D

I wouldnt quite go as low as that! Yeah it was hyped and failed to impress that much, but you gotta admit kaos was good fun, and to get that many people on screen at once was impressive, I would give it 7, maybe 6.5 out of 10

Hmmm..... well, I guess being able to beat up people w/ the heads and limbs of other people can merit a higher grade...
I\'ll change to 6.:D

Alright, alright, yea it was amazing that they were able to fit that many ppl on screen at once but maybe it was to many.

A mission could be to go kill a person and you have to look through a sea of pedestrians to find them.

Or you could be exscorting  someone to safety and the next thing you know you lose track of where they are.

Question is, how many is to many?

Seems to me that this game is lacking in a lot of features. Its as though the amount of people on screen was its selling point and the game doesn\'t provide the AI to back them up.

This isn\'t a game I have purchased. By the sounds of it I may rent it.

Sounds like a lot of you have not played the game very much. Has anyone who has given it a low score played it long enough to get off of the mall level? When you beat the mall level you unlock the hispanic guy and he is pretty funny. That is where I am at right now. I havent played it in a while because I was wrapped up in another game but I think I might pop it back in later today and pick up where I left off. Overall, I liked the game a lot.

It would have been better if it had a co-op mode though.

Have played with the Hispanic guy and he really doesnt add to the game much, just another character. He is actually problly my least favorite character. Seeing is crack hang out the back of his pants the whole time isn\'t very pleasing to watch.
