Who here is running Linux?

I\'m thinking about switching to Linux, well actually I\'m going to partition my HD, so I can still use XP for games that require it.  But what are your thoughts about Linux, like it, dislike it?

I\'m probably the only one here that uses it.  I like Red Hat.  Mandrake is alright, too.

I\'m thinking about running Linux as my one and only OS, partitioning my HD is starting to be to costly, time wise.  Having to put a primary partition withing 2gb of the first 1024 cylinders, is starting to get me a bit annoyed.

I don\'t get it... what\'s the difference between... oh let\'s say... Linux and XP?  What does Linux do?  I just don\'t get it *stumped*

theomen, Can\'t you just emulate Windows from Linux?  I do not recommend splitting a partition between two opporating systems.  Sure, it could work just fine, but most likely you\'ll be getting yourself into some deep crap (unless you really know what you are doing).

I once duel booted my system with Lilo: Red Hat Linux 6.1 and Windows 98.  Since my HDD is only 8 gigs, my Windows partition eventually got too full and somehow started taking over the Linux partition.  Linux stopped booting up after that, so I just reformatted and am now using Win98 exclusively.  And even though I repartitioned my HDD multiple times, I could never get rid of that 1024 cylinders thing.  Every time I run scandisk, it says it found an error and fixed it (but it never really does fix it).

I recommend you either have one or the other, but not both.  I have heard that WinXP is pretty good, so it’s up to you to decide if it’s worth it to go through the trouble installing and learning Linux.  But if you think you know what you\'re doing, then go for it.

Linux is an open source code Operating System, unlike Windows which source code is still being hoarded by Microsoft.  People from around the world program their own programs and features into it, and usually release it for free to everyone else.  Almost all of the software for it is free, which is a huge plus.  But the bad thing about it is that it\'s reletively hard to install, and takes quite a while to learn how to use it.  The good things about it are that it almost never crashes (it\'s probably the most stable OS out there, even better than the Macintosh OSs), and also it is a great hacking tool.  If you ever want to become a hacker, you need Linux instead of Windows.  Oh, and it has way cool screen savers.

And one more thing... what does it look like?  Does it look kinda like windows and mac:  Windows and toolbars and cursers and everything?  I\'m just wondering... if somebody has a screenshot of Linux, just like with a window open I\'d like to see it (I\'m really curious) if you have one could you email ti to me at... The actual Linux part is kind of like DOS.  But there are many Windows-like GUIs (graphical user interface), that you install when you install Linux.  If you install one of the GUIs, it will look kind of like Windows and MacOS with the cursor and the menus, etc.  I liked using Linux when I did have it because I could set it up exactly how I wanted it.  It definitely isn\'t for beginners though.  I haven\'t used it for more than a year, so my knowledge of it is pretty limited, and it could have changed a lot since the version I had.  If you want to know the details about it, go look around the net for info on it.

I had a Red Hat partition a while back, it was good but I didn\'t use it that much, threw it out and put BeOSon my machine instead, lovely OS but no support.....at all so I went ack to a Windoze system.

I have a primary Windows 2000 partition and a 2ndary ext3 Linux partition on my HDD at home and at the office.  It\'s good b/c you can get Win2k to dual boot to Linux without much effort or having to overwrite your MasterBoot Record.  Windows is still good for my games and for the things that won\'t translate well to Linux.  I\'ll post a screenshot of it for .pERIOd. in a few.

I recommend Partition Magic to save some time and headaches.

My server which http://www.doodmonkeyradio.com runs on is linux - my mp3 server is on that same box.

I use linux at home for my router /  firewall / dhcp services for my LAN.

I also run a Win 2k machine, and a couple XP machines.

Upload size limit is set too small.  .pERIOd., check your e-mail.

I have a dual boot setup on my home PC.  It has three partitions, which I made with PartitionMagic:  A small FAT16, a large FAT32 containing Win98, and a large NTFS containing Win2K.  Next time I rebuild this PC I\'m going to go all Win2K or WinXP.  I don\'t think I\'d have much use for Linux unfortunately.

well I think I have my laptop ready for the install, I\'m going to try to install Linux as a second OS, and in theory my partitions are set up correctly and it should be a clean install, but then again nothing ever works like I think it "should".  If it won\'t install cleanly as a second I\'m just going to throw caution to the wind and install it as my soul OS, though I do hate to lose Adobe Photoshop, but oh well.

Well just use the GIMP (it\'s good, but no program can compare to my beloved Photoshop)
