PS2 games that stand the test of time
« on: April 16, 2002, 11:19:46 PM »
Pretty much self explanatory.I just want to see what games people are still playing out of their PS2 collection.

I find that whenever I want to play something on my PS2 I have a hard time deciding what to play, mainly because I can\'t manage my time between newer games and some of the really good older games I own.

Right now I own:

-SSX: Not really playing it anymore

-TTT: Ditto, mainly because of the IMO far superior VF4

-Star Wars Starfighter: mmmm, haven\'t touched this one in many months

-Red Faction: FPS make me wanna hurl...seriously I get motion sickness. This game is my brother\'s, I haven\'t played it, ever.

-Gungriffon Blaze: Same as above

-Onimusha: These type of games have zero replay value

-Twisted Metal: Black: I\'m working on it, but very sporadically

-GT3: I will never be done playing this game. I sort of play it in spurts, sometimes it\'ll get forgotten for a month and then it\'ll be the only thing I play for two weeks straight.

-DMC: Damn that Dante Must Die level! I\'m probably progressing at a rate of one mission a month. The bosses at this difficulty are just insanely difficult, it\'s like you\'re smacking them with a toothpick and they strike back with back hoe.

-AC4: Still not done with this little gem from NAMCO.

-MGS2: SOL: I won\'t stop until I have 100% on the Dogtags from every single difficulty :eyemouth:

-ZOE: 5hr game with no replay value? Who at Konami approved this game? It\'s a shame really because the control and the camara were positively brilliant, same goes for the mech design. Not playing this one anymore.

-ICO: I get sudden urges to relive this surreal adventure every now and then.

-Jak and Daxter: This game had nothing for the hardcore gamers, it was completely kid oriented, with no consideration for anyone who might be looking for an actual challenge. Nothing worth revisiting, so I\'m not playing it anymore.

-FFX: Still working on making my characters ubber.

-VF4: Once you start one match in Kumite, it\'ll be a long time before you can tear yourself away.

-Sky Oddysey: This game is a work of genious. I just recently picked it up real cheap and I have to say its better than half the crap in my collection. If you can look past the alaised, flickering, low poly, foggy graphics (they\'re not actually THAT bad),you will find one of the most fun, engaging, and satisfying games on the PS2. The game has a real sense of discovery similar to that of ICO, plus the semi-relistic physics engine makes for some entertaining flying, and the ocassionaly strategy that is mixed in means some of the missions might take several attempts. So I\'m still playing this one, but I\'m not so sure about it\'s replay value.

-SH2: Still play this one. I can\'t make too much progress because I refuse to play it in the daytime, so I expect it will still be a while before I get the other 4(?) endings.

-GTA3: I try to play this game, but somehow when I made the switch from my dad\'s 27 inch tv to my mom\'s 35 inch, I started getting really bad motion sickness. 3d sickness is the bane of gamers like me. I will never be able to experience the mayhem of Halo, Half-life and now it seems GTA3. It\'s a good thing I practically finished the game before switching TVs.

So that\'s a total of 11 games competing for my time, I really don\'t have to purchase another game till 2003 at the earliest.

Personally, most the games you listed get old REAL quick.

Like ICO for instance, once your finished, you don\'t really feel like playing it again.

GT3 is hard to beat, but the lack of tracks and adjustable settings make it boring after awhile.

In the order I acquired them :

TTT : Still play it occasionally, as not to lose my touch. Fun with other people, single player modes stink (too easy).

Fantavision : The 2-player mode is a real blast (very much pun intended), the single player mode is getting quite old, but I still try to get those insane combos done (managed some 250+ combo on one of the later levels, hard work...)

SSX : There\'s nothing quite as refreshing as a flashy ride down Elysium Alps... mmm... I still love this game, maybe I\'ll get Tricky too :)

(here it gets a little fuzzy, can\'t remember the order anymore, bah...)

Devil May Cry : DMD is nuts! And I\'m loving it! This game will live forever :D

Resident Evil : Code Veronica X : Still haven\'t completed the bonus missions, so there\'s still life in this one too.

Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec : I haven\'t played much of this game recently... If I had a decent table to mount my steering wheel on, it\'d be more popular...

Burnout : See above...

Crazy Taxi : Mindless fun in short bursts when I can\'t think of anything better to do.

Silent Hill 2 : I\'ve seen only one ending, and I intend to see the rest too. Fab game.

Metal Gear Solid 2 : I won\'t rest until I\'ve got 100% of the tags. And it\'s bloody good fun messing with the guards with the stealth gear *meanie*

Kuri Kuri Mix (Cookie & Cream) : With a friend; good fun. The single player mode is just a bit too complicated for my tastes...

Jak & Daxter : Not much to go back to, but the game\'s impeccable *cough* presentation kinda pulls me back in to see it all over once again.

Zone of the Enders : This is the only game I haven\'t touched in a looooong time... I\'ve been thinking of going through it once more though, the bosses kicked ass.

I\'m sure I\'m forgetting some game now...

Dynasty Warriors 3:  A new experience in the Hack n Slash Genre.  This is the first game where so many enemies appear on screen at once, plus it has a little strategy involved as well.  If you haven\'t tried it, you should give it a shot.  It blows away the 2nd.  You also get to ride on Elephants.  It has more game modes as well that you will be playing this game for months trying to unlock all the secret characters.

Maximo:  I loved Ghoul\'s n Ghosts for the Genesis and Super Ghoul\'s n Ghosts for the Super Nintendo.  This game almost has the difficulty of the original 16bit games.  A 3D platformer with great graphics and gameplay.

Silent Hill 2:  A creepy game that scared the hell out of me.  I finished the game and saw one ending.  Gotta see the other endings now.

Fatal Frame:  Even more creepy than SH2.  You should check this game out!

Good Question;)

I have been thinking the same thing lately.  I actually have been playing a lot of my PS1 games and even purchased a 8bit NES system...sometimes I feel like the good old days of great gameplay.

Here are mine:

GT3:  Have it for a year now and is still playing it when I can, busy with the F1 races...they are damm difficult!

GTA3: On mission 38 only, so I have loads to complete.

MGS2: Finished it once and need to still do the Tags thing...and find all the funny secret stuff.

DOA2: Still play the hell out of this game...I have a multitap though, so with friends is where the fun lies...single player sucks now.

Jak and Daxter: This game was good while it lasted but now it is lying in the dust.

JB:AUF: I am still having good fun with the multi player side of it, but you must have a multitap.

Silent Hill 2: Have two endings and I am busy with the third game on hard mode.  This game shows other adventure games how replay value should be handled.

Project Eden: Worth every cent of my money.  Was the best puzzle game I have played thus far.  When finished there is several multiplayer battle arenas and even a racin stage that mhas you taking control of a tank (something like RC stunt).

Rumble Racing: This game is the most underrated game on the PS2.  Play this with a friend, either as a team or against each other, and see what the word GAMEPLAY means;)

The Bouncer: Crap! Enough said.

Rugby: Yes, we in South Africa like our rugby like you Americans love your American Football and you Europeans love your soccer.  Still have great fun with this game.  Seeing as this is the third rugby game to be released in the console history, I suppose that I can\'t complain;)

SSX: Tying to get all the players to masters level and then I am going to unlock all there outfits.
A word of advice:

In the working world there is only two ships that sink: 1.) a Battle ship, and 2.) Partnership

1) ICO: I love the game but its replay value is around a zero or so.
2) Z.O.E.: Hmmm, no replay at all.
3) MGS2: I will play for months, possibly years to come.
4) GT3: Still playing.
5) Draken: taking a break from it. Good game, but I see no replay value.
6) Baulders Gate: Good game, great graphics, some replay. Can’t wait for the second one.
7) FFX: Beat it. I cannot afford to sacrifice any more of my life to this game. After getting all the Aeons and most of the special weapons I have to say that it lost it’s “flava”.

I guess that I like the new more than I do the old. When I buy a game I buy it for the experience I get out of it the first time around. I don’t consider replay value much when I purchase a game.

The game I play the most has to be Pro Evo Soccer, it has the best replay value ever!! I play on that pretty much every day, most other games have very litle or no replay value.

Oh right   ... Since in Kumite mode all you do is fight the same characters over and over except they change costumes and names and get gradually harder. Woohoo... fun... I tore myself away after figuring out that Kumite mode is really pointless.

I only have two games that are standing well in time\'s wind and they are:

Madden 2002- Football games always last long for football fans. However I know its going to feel outdated once 2003 comes around. But I started a little tradition where I only buy a new football game every 2 years.

and

SSX Tricky- Unbelievably fun. After I powered up all characters to the max. I just free ride and blast my music from my cd player. Its just good fun.

Well since you only rented the game, and played no more than 15 matches I\'m not suprised you failed to see the appeal. In my mind the whole point is to trick your character out, and raise your ranking to something intimidating along the lines of "Emperor". So that when you take your memory card over to a friends house you can load up your tricked out Akira, complete with Emperor ranking, and have your friend prepare for a beating (tm).

A lot of other people who\'ve played VF4 find Kumite mode very addicting, and many of them have played the game for more than one weekend. Then again maybe the style of gameplay is just not your bag, you should try playing with a friend, that\'s always way more entertaining.

Here\'s my game collection, along with my personal description of each game\'s replay value and how long I\'ve gone without playing them.

Dark Cloud:   I finished the game once, and I never bothered to go through the secret tower place that is unlocked.  I might play again, but I have my doubts...  (Approx. Shelf Time:  9 months)

Devil May Cry:  Again, I only finished this game once.  But once I\'m done playing some of my other games, I\'m going to try and conquer the Dante May Die mode.  (Approx. Shelf Time:  4 months)

Dynasty Warriors 2:  Wow.  I\'ve had DW2 since launch and I\'d be surprised if I haven\'t logged over 300 hours into it.  But since I now have the sequel, Dynasty Warriors 3, I plan to trade DW2 in soon since it can\'t really compare to its younger brother.  (Approx. Shelf Time:  4 months)

Dynasty Warriors 3:  No contest here.  I\'ll be playing this one until DW4 is released.  (Approx. Shelf Time:  None.  It\'s in my PS2 CD tray)

Final Fantasy X:  I beat it once, but I\'m not done yet.  I still want to max out all my characters\' stats, and that\'ll take at least another 50 hours.  (Approx. Shelf Time:  1 month)

Grand Theft Auto 3:  I haven\'t had GTA3 for very long, so it\'s still a fresh experience to me when I play it.  I\'m only 50% done, according to the in-game stats, so I\'ll be playing this one for a while too.  (Approx. Shelf Time:  2 days)

Gran Turismo 3:  Meh.  I was never a big fan of the GT series, and GT3 hasn\'t really changed my opinion on anything.  I got the game during the summer last year, and I only played it for a couple weeks before I moved onto the next game.  However, since I don\'t want to feel as though I wasted my money, I\'ll eventually go for the golden 100% completion rating.  (Approx. Shelf Time:  10 months)

ICO:  Loved the game the first time.  I\'m looking forward to play it a second time.  (Approx. Shelf Time:  6 months)

Metal Gear Solid 2:  I\'ve played it dozens of times already, but I still want more.  I\'m looking forward to collecting all of the dog tags and completing the game on Extreme mode without being spotted, but I\'m guessing it\'ll take me a long time before I can do it.  (Approx. Shelf Time:  3 months)

Onimusha:  Played it twice, and I\'m not really looking to play it again.  Once I get the sequel, I probably won\'t be holding on to the original for very long.  (Approx. Shelf Time:  7 months)

Rayman 2:  I\'ve had this game for a while, but I always play it "off and on."  I haven\'t finished it yet, but I will.  Some day.  (Approx. Shelf Time:  8 months)

Red Faction:  I really like this game, and I\'m going to play it again.  Maybe not now, but once I get that thirst for Geo-modding the hell out of something, RF will be at the top of my list.  (Approx. Shelf Time:  7 months)

Ring of Red:  Another game I like, and I look forward to giving it another go again.  Too bad it\'ll be overshadowed by games that have a stronger hold on my interest, and I doubt I\'ll get around to playing it anytime soon.  (Approx. Shelf Time:  10 months)

Silent Hill 2:  I\'ve only seen one of the endings, but I don\'t have much of an incentive to see the rest.  Maybe if I\'m bored some night and want to take a trip through the town of Silent Hill again, I\'ll do it.  (Approx. Shelf Time:  6 months)

SSX:  One of the few good multiplayer games I have in my collection, I\'ll be keeping this one around for those times when I\'m tired of the single player experience.  (Approx. Shelf Time:  10 months)

Star Wars Starfighter:  I loved this game way back when, but I\'ve sort of forgotten about it for the past several months.  Sadly, I\'ll probably be trading this one in before I ever play it again.  (Approx. Shelf Time:  11 months)

Twisted Metal Black:  Mmmmm... Twisted Metal... I\'m a big fan of the series, and I\'ll be playing Part: Black again some day soon.  I just don\'t know when.  (Approx. Shelf Time:  5 months)

Zone of the Enders:  Farewell, ZoE.  After only finishing you once, I can\'t say I grew too fond of you.  If I ever need to trade a game in, you\'ll be the first to go.  (Approx. Shelf Time:  1 year)

Wow... I typed a lot.

Mmmmm... surprizingly enlightening.

WOW ...
GT3: Oddly enough i still play this game like crazy. I luv racing games :)
Starwars Starfighter: Still play this one now and then. Low flying with nyms bomber and blowin the heck outta tanx is the coolest.
Midnight Club:   i come to it now and then to remind myself of the good times i had when i first got it. Kinda dusty but it gets its fair share.
Smugglers run: I loved it and forgot it about a month or two before christmas. lasted though
SSX: Sooo fun....while my ps2 wasnt broken. Now it collects dust and will barely ever see a laser again
Sky Odyssee: Damn this games a blast. Ive gone far but i havent played it for a while. Im sure ill come back to it.
MGS2: Ps2 broken....damn.... got tired after many many hours
GTA3: great still after being beaten. Theres nothing like flying the dodo or poppin pills in portland and firing at the po po\'s with the assalt rifles  (watching as ppl dive out the way and shells falling to the floor)
ZOE: Man this game was pretty kool it just sucked the way they left you hanging. I wanted to go to mars damnit! (Anyone get the mystery ending??? if there was one)
TimeSplitters: A total riot with friends over. Not to much playing otherwise
DOA2: Off and on. One week ill play it like crazy then a month without even mention.
The Bouncer: Good God! Im sorry but this game is fun as hell. I dont own it maybe thats why but me and my cuz play this like crazy  when i rent it. Great graphics, short game with lots of little things to do, ( i like the atmosphere) they should make a more in depth sequel

There are other games that are great that im forgetting and i dont own..

Can anyone tell me a reason to stay loyal. I try and i am but xbox has some pretty nifty stuff and its all new and im thinkin about getting a peice of the pie. Im waiting till E3 but somebody tell me that its going to be ok or just smack me into shape. PLEASE!. Mommy :( .

HELL YEAH! They need to release an updated version and try to actually get some licenses. Then, that game would own all! By the way, this is the only game I never traded in.
