Microsoft announced today that the company expects to sell 3.5 to 4 million Xboxes in the 2002 fiscal year, ending June 30. The previous forecast projected sales of 4.5 - 6 million. The adjustment can be blamed on low Xbox sales in Japan and Europe. Microsoft has cut the price of Xbox in Europe by nearly 40% to boost sluggish sales. Charlotte Stuyvenberg, director of Xbox communications, said to CNET that Microsoft was building relationships with Capcom and other game developers to produce titles tailored for Japanese tastes, the main factor in ensuring long-term success for the Xbox in Japan.
"In Japan, it\'s really a content objective for us," she said. "There\'s a flavor of content consumers are looking for that\'s very different than what consumers want in North America and Europe...It\'s going to take us some time."
Microsoft aims to have 9 million to 11 million units installed by the end of June 2003.
