  yah, in NFL you have one specialized guy who can actually throw,  a few people who can actually catch, and the rest just bashing eachother.. in Rugby everyone has to be able to catch, pass and bash eachother.. everyone has to defend, everyone gets to attack etc. etc.  everyone is on the park much longer, the fitness level theorhetically would have to be higher (although most NFL players should be incredibly fit also)

plus the kicking game is far more in depth and requires more skill.. it also requires a lot of thinking on your feet, you dont have 5 minutes to decide which play could fool them, you have split second reaction time to try and fool them, what do you do?  kick, pass run, dummy, masturbate, bend over and fart in their faces, or whatnot..

as much as i like American Football.. i dont think it has the skill of Rugby.. plus Rugby is far more varied

soccer is the true football.. but ill still call it soccer  :)

Great post Bob, eventhough I\'m not a rugby fan either I do appreciate rugby a whole lot more than NFL.

NFL doesn\'t flow like rugby or soccer. It\'s stopped every god damn 15secs and there\'s a pause for a min so that the TV sponsors can sell themselves.
What\'s up with that, is that fun to watch? Hell no.

I think it\'s great people like different sports, to each their own but I don\'t like it when people (especially americans) dismiss a sport as unfun, unskillful or as a sissy sport purely coz it wasn\'t invented by them or the fact that they aren\'t any good at it.

I\'m not taking away from Rugby players, yes they are skilled, BUT they are not as skilled as Football players.  The NFL has people who scout players 24/7, and the only ex-Rugby player I know that has gone to the NFL was a kicker.  And don\'t you think if you were a Rugby player, and had the chance to get paid millions and millions of dollars, you would take it.

BTW heres a question, I understand that soccer is the most played sport in the world,  but why is the superbowl the most watched event in the world? <-- not sarcastic

First off, to answer someone\'s question on why American Football is called football.  It was named that way cuz the pigskin is exactly one foot in length.  That\'s it.

And about Americans not really being into soccer much, well, I didn\'t really like soccer at all when I was in the states, but after having moved to Japan, I find myself keeping track of soccer(football) a lot, and I sit there and actually watch the games with interest.  Funny, cuz now I can name a few significant players, whom I would\'ve never known had I stayed in the states.  It all has to do with the media, and how they take up the sport.  If the American media took up soccer like they do here in japan, and showed all the intriguing things about the sport, then I\'d grant a lot of people would find themselves interested in the sport.  Same goes with American Football.  If it was covered in detail in Europe, then I\'m pretty sure there\'d be a lot of people interested in the sport.  Its just a matter of media coverage, and how in depth those coverage goes.  If the media doesnt explain the small details, and show the parts of soccer that makes soccer interesting, then no one in the states are gonna actually want to watch soccer.  They just won\'t get the significance of the sport.. that\'s it.
blah blah blah, blah blah blah

So its the americans that are ignorant about sports:rolleyes:
American football takes more skill than you could imagine and you don\'t give it any respect, atleast I said something good about football (soccer).  And to say that football just requires you to be specialized at one thing sounds good but isn\'t true.  For instance, a Reciever has to be able to block, run, catch, and flow.  Sounds like more stuff than any of you could handle.  I\'d like to see some of those Rugby players run a 4.2.  I\'m considered fast in track and I can only run a 4.8.  Thats a long ass time between 4.2 and 4.8.  Only the top notch athletes ever make it far in football, so its really no different than how one of you explained the skill involved in soccer.  Oh and Warren Sapp runs a 4.4 even though hes a heavy ass linemen.  Now thats amazing.

Sapp is DL, played for Florida, and interestingly enough, took The Rocks spot on the Defensive Line.

theres a few possibilities here..

a) the fact that nobody plays rugby in USA therefore the american rugby player sucks therefore they will not be offered that money

b) people from other countries do indeed hate NFL.. and arent as money driven as americans

c)  the fact that its a different sport and requires different skills.. they might not be the best at {insert specific job you play for 5 minutes for here} in NFL, but you take a guy from NFL the best at what he does and put him in rugby and you see how well he will do.. hell i bet he would be walking around confused at what is going on because they dont stop every 13 seconds

bah, i lost my train of thought, i had a few other reasons.. but.. eh well

are you claiming that NFL is the most played sport in the world?  because i can tell you that it wouldnt be in the top ten.  Soccer itself doesnt have a single yearly event as NFL, what they do have (i.e. the European leagues) also arent as much of a spectical or the \'pinnicle\' of their sport.. there are many many reasons for this

The biggest sporting events over the entire world are:
     a) Olympics
     b) FIFA World Cup Soccer
     c) F1 Racing
basically, it ranks up there, and American Football is definitely not on the list.  Superbowl is the most tuned in television show in America, but I have never heard that it was the case for the world-wide audience.  Japanese here couldn\'t really care less as to who won the Superbowl, but they sure as hell care as to who won the World Cup.

Soccer being one of the biggest worldwide sport is a given.

And there debateably many reasons as to why:
     a) Soccer requires little money to play.  You have something that rolls and a pair of feet, you can play soccer
     b) ..... okay, I lost my train of thought too.. but a is probably the biggest reason anyways.

I wouldn\'t seriously debate which sport is better than which sport, because every sport have their differences.  Personally I think Basketball is the greatest sport ever.  Some others would say hockey, some would say soccer, some would say football.  Even a few would probably select Curling over any of those.  They\'re all sports, and they\'re all professional sports for a good reason or another.

But the naming is confusing, and often times one is talked about instead of the other, etc. but as I pointed out before, American Football was called Football simply because the pigskin is a foot long.  Just some stupid idiot American back in the days, who didn\'t realize that his decision of words would make such a ruckus in the world of sports 1200 years afterwards..
blah blah blah, blah blah blah

My earlier question as to why the Superbowl was the most watched one day sporting event has been answered...by myself!

I was wrong when I said it was numero uno, I found out that while it has 1 billion viewers, it is not the top show. I found this on a site:

"For instance, the estimated audience for the soccer World Cup is more than 2 billion viewers worldwide for the single-day championship match. Cricket\'s World Cup has an estimated 2.5 billion viewers worldwide, but receives scant attention in the United States. The Rugby World Cup claimed 2.5 billion viewers for its 1995 broadcast from South Africa. "

But for those soccer fans out their, just keep in mind Cricket is still beating you, and i think we can all agree that Cricket sucks ass!

There is no way that cricket is more watched than football!!!!

Anyway, football is called football, full stop. American football is called American football, full stop. You yanks cant say, \'blah, blah, should be called soccer.\' The point is, what the sports are called should be based on a WORLDWIDE view. This means that football IS the game where you kick the round ball with your feet. This thread has got totally out of hand, all adan was trying to do was show some pictures after all!!
