A New Science Question, YAY!!

If the sun were to disappear tomarrow, would we see darkness before we were broken loose of the gravity of the sun?  The sun is 93 million miles from earth, and the speed of light is 186,282.3976 miles per second.  So it takes roughly 8 minutes for light to reach us from the sun.


I have the answer, but would like to see what people have to say about the subject.

umm.... what subject?

I\'ll rephrase, "I want to see what people think would happen if said event happend(would we break loose of the suns gravity, before seeing the sky go dark)."

if it just dissapeared, like magic, poof. . . it\'s gone?  Uh, yeah we\'d see it go dark.  And just drift I guess.  We\'d continue our present path for a little bit.  I guess it then depends on the distance of us to Jupiter or something, and from what direction.


I dunno.  Give me some numbers to crunch on.

Update, we\'d probably start moving outward pretty fast, away from where the sun was, but we\'d see it get dark.

Yeah, I think so since it takes like, 3 minuites for light to get from the surface of the sun to earth. Once the sun is gone, poof, dissapeared, there\'s no more source for the gravity... so we\'d just float away. Funny thing tho.. the light that we see today was generated well over a million years ago, but because the sun is so dence, it hasn\'t made it\'s way to the surface until just 3 minuites ago. Is that right? Or is it 10million - 100million years ago??

In the end, would it even matter?

First of all, I don\'t see how anyone could know the answer to what would happen, since such a situation would be impossible.  So any answer would just be in theory, right?  Anyway, I think we\'d be released from the gravitational pull first, but we wouldn\'t realize it until after we stop seeing light from the sun

shockwaves answer sounds right, but would be applicable if the sun suddenly dissapeared as stated in the question where as if the sun were to slowly move away then its a totally different story.

the commonly accepted theory is that due to the speed of gravity being at least 2x10^10 c, and the speed of light being c.  (Originally Einstein said nothing could be fastet than light, but then later said that gravity is the mergeing of space-time and matter-energy, allowing it to exceed c.) that if the sun were to disapear we would instantly be hurled into space at 67,000 miles per hour.  And we would see the sky go dark, but after we had been freed of gravity.
