The verdict concerning catholic priests?
« on: April 30, 2002, 10:32:16 AM »
What do want to see done to these guys? According to this article some say they deserve the death penalty.

Quote

The church, of course, cannot execute people, but its quandary over how to deal with its molestation scandal in many ways mirrors the long-running and contentious debate over how society should deal with people who violate children — particularly those who do it repeatedly.
Among the options some consider is the death penalty — a choice Montana and Louisiana have enacted into law, and which the Alabama House of Representatives recently voted for overwhelmingly, although it has not been made law there yet.
The Montana law allows a person previously convicted of "sexual intercourse without consent" with a person younger than 16 in any state to be sentenced to death if convicted of that crime in Montana.

I really can\'t say anything because there are probably Catholics here but these priests that have been in the news, just need to keep there pecker in their pants.  But these aren\'t girls, they\'re little boys for crying out loud.  They don\'t need a death penalty unless the abuse was ****ing horrible.  But that\'s all I gonna say because I don\'t want to start a war.

Catholic here.

Hang\'em high, I say.

And priests should be allowed to marry, like they used to.

Do you think that will keep them from wanting sexual relations with little boys?

I’m not being sarcastic, I was just wondering what your thoughts on this were.

It\'s not natural for a man to be celibate. For some, it\'s down right insane. They gotta have some sexual outlet. Some will secretly date consenting women, others may target helpless kids.

Not all priests are like this. Many are honest and honorable people. But like any walks of life, there are child molesters from school teachers to judges (and they don\'t have to be celibate).

And the bible even says…

Genesis 2:18
The Lord God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him."

So I have to agree with you man. It’s odd to see that if the Bible says it is not good for man to be alone then why are they in the Catholic priesthood?

Marrige will not alleviate the problem.

Many denominations allow clergy to marry, and still there are pedophiles and other scum in the ranks.

80% of the cases are homosexual in nature. The Catholic church has to ban homosexuals, period. That one act alone (if enforced) would solve 80% of the problem. The other %20 will be MUCH harder to find and eliminate.

Either way it\'s a tough situation and perv\'s are in all woks of life. If clergy is to die for these illegal abuses, then so should normal joe shmoe\'s. Personally I think sex offenders should get severely punished, and repeat offenders SHOULD die.

I think ANYONE that rapes or molests ANYONE should receive the death penalty. As with murder, the offender is taking something from someone they will never get back.

Your exactly right, luckee. Someone who suffers a sexual attack has to deal with a fate worse than death. Can you imagine what kind of pain those kids gotta go through? And there\'s no telling how it\'s gonna affect them when they are older. If you ruin someone\'s life that way, you might as well have killed \'em. The death penalty? Well, an eye for an eye, as I always say.

You know I like you Cygnus, but...

Homosexuals don\'t rape children, pedophiles rape children.  I don\'t know how the hell the church would go about weeding out any group of undesirables - FBI background checks?  Yeah right.  I suppose before you enter priesthood, a cardinal could strap you to a chair, show you various porn, and monitor your ummm...arousal - even less likely to happen.

I think this whole scandal goes to show that the Catholic Church is going about things horribly wrong.  I mean, what kind of religion is it that somehow draws sex offenders to it?  When I try to imagine where the Vatican stores their scandal records, I picture the final scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark.  Their beliefs and guidelines are outdated, and exist solely to give them power as far as I\'m concerned.

Not saying that the Catholic Church is evil necessarily, I just think some bad habits have seriously snowballed over the centuries.
