The gamne also allows you to play from 2 different character angles

the 1st being the retired criminal who is balckmailed

the other being the shady cop chasing you down

Hows that for replay value

Glad to see the game is coming around..... about time

that\'s a great 3d model of the inside of the automobile (the best I\'ve ever seen) but seriously... the inside of a car????  hmm...  i dunno, but I\'m curious as to how the inside of the car is going to come into the game..

Sony mismanagement or thank you to gamers?

We have learned that SCE’s upcoming PlayStation 2 title The Getaway will be unable to make a profit, due to the huge amount of cash the company has spent during production.

The Getaway is without doubt the most intriguing of all planned PlayStation 2 titles in production at this time. From the very beginning when the game first entered the public domain, controversy seemed an integral part of the title’s make up.

The initial flare came when Sony released shots taken from the game in 2000. So good were these screens, it became evident that they were doctored photos. As we exclusively revealed last year, this was simply a marketing cock-up and a breakdown in communications between the development team the marketing department.

And Sony’s reaction to this blunder? Well, it was simply amazing. It just said, “wait and see, the game will look as good as we have said.” Incredible. So Sony battened down the hatches and got to work. Although we do not know the exact figure spent on The Getaway at this time, members of the development team have freely stated, off the record, that it is “an unrecoverable sum.”

As Sony announces huge profits, largely powered by the success of the PlayStation 2, it can afford to make something special, a game that will set new standards and serve to make the PlayStation 2 the must-have machine. Even if The Getaway cannot fund its development costs through retail sales, the knock-on effect of the PlayStation 2 hosting one of the greatest games ever created, though not directly related to, or tangibly connected to The Getaway, will be well worthwhile.

This news should be welcomed by the gaming community and digested without cynicism. The value of the games industry on a global basis is huge, yet more and more companies are living hand-to-mouth, releasing games at as fast a rate as possible, to keep cashflow healthy. Given Sony’s consolidated position, it can afford to lavish expense on a killer app.

Hopefully this will set a precedent across the games world.

At this point in time, The Getaway is still some way off, though we might just see something at E3.

Nice pics, but the textures on that 3rd one could use some work.

I\'m going to bet that The Getaway will turn out to be either extremely great or considerably bad.  For some reason, I don\'t think it will be just "average."

and i\'m a little worried, because simply pouring resources into a project doesnt make the project run any faster or any better.

Well, if the original design of the game is not good, or if the core programmers aren\'t the smartest people, then no matter how many people and money you spend on a single project, the outcome can still be less than something designed and built by a much smaller yet efficient team.  For example, my company has a really big project that its working on, and its very important and stuff like that, so they\'ve gone full blown and are using about 500 people to make the project run, but the truth of the matter is is that 500 people won\'t solve a problem that 2 people can\'t.

I\'m not saying whether the Getaway will be good or no, just hoping that people at Sony aren\'t using their resources in the wrong way.

the reason this game has been so expensive to make is purely because of the premise of the game.  it is set in realistically captures 70 square kilometers of London (50sq miles).. this means that they have been out with a digital camera, day after day taking photos of shop fronts etc. etc.  everything from the local HMV musc store, to light posts and post office boxes have been captured.. if its in London.. it is in this game..

which is why they will never make a profit, unless they do a major sequal

i just hope the game plays fast.. an arcadey feel would probably be preferred  from me, but i think it will be realistic, so it will be different from GTA3

and thanks for the info Ddaryl, playing as the cop chasin him could be absolutely sweet.  its great to see after putting in all the money to capture the city that they are trying to make the most of it..

i hope it does turn out well..
