At 11pm on Monday night, Sony CEA announced a dramatic cut in prices across the board for all of its products. With news leaking of a suspected Xbox price drop at next week\'s E3, it has been assumed that Sony CEA would respond in some way. It\'s safe to say that although speculation has been rife of the impending price war, no one expected Sony to move so quickly and so aggressively.
If you\'ve been putting off the decision to buy a PS2...wait no more! The price drop is effective IMMEDIATELY.

Here is the full text of Sony\'s announcement...


SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT AMERICA PREPARES FOR FURTHER MARKET EXPANSION WITH AGGRESSIVE NEW PRICING STRUCUTRE

Consumer Demand Expected to Escalate as PlayStation 2 to Retail for $199; PS one Priced at $49

FOSTER CITY, Calif., May 13, 2002 - Pursuing its long-term vision of making computer entertainment accessible to mass-market audiences, Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. announced that effective immediately, its leading PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system will be available to consumers for $199, a more than 30 percent reduction from its current suggested retail price (SRP). As the company recently achieved cumulative worldwide shipments of 30 million units and with a greatly enhanced value proposition, it is well positioned to drive consumer interest in PlayStation 2 to unforeseen levels.

In addition to the new PlayStation 2 price, the company also announced a new price for the PS one console of $49 SRP, a reduction of 50 percent. The combined sales of PlayStation and PS one now total more than 30 million units in North America alone, with a PlayStation or PS one console in one out of every three U.S. households. Following is the new pricing breakdown by platform:

PLAYSTATION 2

PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system $199 SRP

Memory Card (8MB) (for PlayStation 2) $ 24 SRP

DUALSHOCK 2 Analog Controller $ 24 SRP



PLAYSTATION

PS one console $ 49 SRP

PS one Combo (console/LCD screen) $149 SRP

DUALSHOCK Analog Controller $ 19 SRP

whereas NGC games are € 59. PS2 games for € 55 would be

EBworld.com is offering a free controller in addition to this price drop.

Also, a free game if you buy a PS2, GC, or XBox bundle.

However, their service SUCKS!!!

I was going to say that they would probably raise the price of games a couple bucks to make up some of the difference, but it looks like they are going to keep these down too.  Very interesting news.  Although I can\'t really say how interesting since I already have one.  Maybe I can go try and get my 100 bucks back as a price match guarantee.  I\'ve only had it a year or so....

Didn\'t Sony DENY this (price drop) rumor  a few months ago ?

I remember seeing this on this site or maybe some other site but I read something from sony about there not being a price drop.

And now it has happened just like the rumor said it would.

YES! I knew it would happen....but not till E3...they probaly did it to strike first against M$...good strategy.....that probaly also means the HDD and BBA will be about $100 total...just a guess......I guess I will be buying my Bro A PS2 soon tyo get him off my back and save wear and tear on my cables.
