Here\'s my take on this issue..
First off, there are a few of you out there who do play online games on your PC. And you probably find that its a really nice feature, and you have fun doing so.
At the same time, you probably have a console, and you have fun playing console games which will never be released for the pc due to different reasons.
Now imagine if you could play many of those console games against opponents that are half way across the world... Like competing in a world wide Gran Turismo tournament or something.. Playing Street Fighter in an online tournament across the entire world.
I mean, I\'m sure some software developer could eventually create a Gran Turismo like game for the PC, and it would probably support online play, but it probably wouldnt hurt for the console to have online capabilities too. There are a lot of quality developers out there who refuse to develop for the PC because of various reasons such as incompatable or unstable specifications for hardware, varying cpu specs.. etc.
Each company probably have their own vision as to what the future will be like. M$ originally tried to bring quality games to the PC world by linking up with the DirectX system, where software developers wouldn\'t have to worry as much about specific hardware and drivers for the hardware. However the variance in hardware and specifications probably forced M$ to come up with a different concept, which could be the xbox.
Sony probably has different plans as in connecting all electrical devices within the household to one central device.
I mean, all these are thoughts for the future, and everyone\'s just taking a step forward at a time. The internet\'s still a new feature, and its barely finding different ways to be used.. which consoles just happens to be one of. Online gaming has barely turned a corner, and there probably will be all kinds of different ideas which come out of this concept. I don\'t know if I\'ll be playing online games using the consoles, but its a good concept, and I hope that it succeeds.
