I dont understand the PC/Console thing.
« on: May 16, 2002, 10:14:34 PM »
I have a pc. Obviously, haha.. Anyway, I dont understand why the consoles are trying to go online.. I mean, the reason I bought my PS2 is because of the platform games I dont get to play on my PC...  And for the arguement about buying a console because you dont want a pc, thats complete bs.  The PS2 and Xbox were both 300 when they first came out, and especially the PS2 was getting bought by meatballs for upwards of 500+ dollars in the US when it was sold out in stores.  I know I can build a pretty nice little computer for 500 bucks... Also, what\'s with the games being released on consoles before PC?  THey usually have more trouble translating from the console to the PC as opposed to translating from the pc to the console(ie GTA3 Release date keep being pushed back).

I often worry that someday all console games will be online in some sort of way. I don\'t really see what the big hubbub is myself. I\'ve got my pc here for online games. When the PS2 goes online, I\'ll probably be the only one who\'s not gonna rush out and buy whatever it is that makes it capable of doing so.
The fire still burns...

I have never used my PC to play online games. So does this mean I won\'t use my PS2 for online games?

Absolutely.

I think the whole online thing is a waste of time, as casual gamers like myself don\'t wanna delve into anything too technical.

Here\'s my take on this issue..

First off, there are a few of you out there who do play online games on your PC.  And you probably find that its a really nice feature, and you have fun doing so.

At the same time, you probably have a console, and you have fun playing console games which will never be released for the pc due to different reasons.

Now imagine if you could play many of those console games against opponents that are half way across the world...  Like competing in a world wide Gran Turismo tournament or something..  Playing Street Fighter in an online tournament across the entire world.

I mean, I\'m sure some software developer could eventually create a Gran Turismo like game for the PC, and it would probably support online play, but it probably wouldnt hurt for the console to have online capabilities too.  There are a lot of quality developers out there who refuse to develop for the PC because of various reasons such as incompatable or unstable specifications for hardware, varying cpu specs.. etc.

Each company probably have their own vision as to what the future will be like.  M$ originally tried to bring quality games to the PC world by linking up with the DirectX system, where software developers wouldn\'t have to worry as much about specific hardware and drivers for the hardware.  However the variance in hardware and specifications probably forced M$ to come up with a different concept, which could be the xbox.

Sony probably has different plans as in connecting all electrical devices within the household to one central device.

I mean, all these are thoughts for the future, and everyone\'s just taking a step forward at a time.  The internet\'s still a new feature, and its barely finding different ways to be used.. which consoles just happens to be one of.  Online gaming has barely turned a corner, and there probably will be all kinds of different ideas which come out of this concept.  I don\'t know if I\'ll be playing online games using the consoles, but its a good concept, and I hope that it succeeds.

I don\'t play online games because i have a life and can\'t donate 100% of my time to gameing.  Thus my ego can\'t take being trampled by a 12 year old in Hobokin, who hasn\'t slept in a week due to playing his game.

^^^^----- All Gamesharkers should be shot and hung by their feet from the nearest lamp post.

*Looks around to make sure noone\'s watching and then hides his Gameshark*

Ok.. I can understand using it for singleplayer games and for menial shyt like duping backups of your weps in RPG\'s and whatnot. Using it to cheat in directly competetive games or using it to destory another person\'s savegame/console is just lame.

Anyhow, I think taking consoles online is a good thing. You might not want to join in the directly competetive games if you don\'t have enough time to practice.. but even as a casual you can enjoy multiplayer Co-op games and titles which don\'t require months and months of dilligent play to be good at. (I.E. PSO, FFXI, AFO.. ect)

Then every once in a great while, you\'ll hit upon a game which you really enjoy.. and actually contiually play enough to get good at. It\'d be nice to take your skillz online to see how you compete against other games on a global scale.
