the ps2 dvd will not pick up your cd-r because of they sony thing where the dvd drive will only read from sony cds and dvds, and audio cds and dvds.  HOWEVER since the HDD is and IDE drive and there is a slave/master option, it is possible to add your own DVD/CD drive to the circuit, and have Linux recognize and read from the drive.  If you read Japanese, here\'s a detailed explanation as to how they managed doing the procedure.

Anything thats not in the playstation format, an audio format, or a dvd format, the ps2 will not read from.  Making the ps2 be able to read regular cdrom and dvdrom media, i have no idea how to do it, and talking about stuff like that could get you banned from these forums.

As for installing other Linux programs and data which you\'d like to retrieve from other cds and dvds, you\'d probably have to add the drive to the HDD unit.. otherwise, I dunno how you\'d go about doing it.  Actually, there would be another possibility.  Since the ethernet port is available for the Linux OS, you could network your home computers together and share files from your PC to the Linux ps2 system.  That\'s another fast way to transfer data without having to add any drives of any sort.

As for media files, there are Linux compatible versions of Winamp and other media playing programs out there which can be installed in the ps2 Linux.

Sony can say what they want but my PS2 recognizes CDRs burned with .wav files.  Don\'t know about the rest of you guys\' units though.

It should also be possible to connect an external USB cd/dvd-rom to the PS2 and have it detected by Linux.

Damn, can\'t say I\'ve tried that, but I already doubt it will work with mine. I\'ll try it out though when I get home.

If its burnt audio cds, yeah of course it\'ll work.  I thought he meant that he burnt the cd as a data cd with .wav files.. instead of .wav files converted to cd-audio format.

I read some time ago that there were some guys working with it so it is possible to play vcd on PS2. I also read RealPlayer was included with Linux Kit but I don\'t know if its true.

Actually I\'m pretty sure the PAL PS2 will not read any CD-Rs. Maybe it\'s different in Japan and the US, but even the Sony DVD players here won\'t read CD-Rs.

hey thanx again every 1 for there voice.. I know ps2 will play cdr\'s as an audio cd, Mine does just like every1\'s should.. and not mp3\'s.. my question was mainly regarding data transfer from cdr\'s using lunix as an alternative 2 adding an external usb device or having to network them.  But I\'m guessing not.

Happy B-Day Seven

Mmh, I honestly haven\'t tried it out yet... I do know though that Sony changed this on their DVD-players with the last series. I guess the main reason to why, is because Sony had the only DVD-players for a while that could not run CD-Rs, thus drawing people to buy a different player. I\'ll check my PS2 when I get home though...

oh, and thanks btw for the wishes guys.. :)

I\'ve only tested my PS2 on audio CDRs and it works.  I haven\'t tried getting it to read anything else since I don\'t have a DVD burner and the PS2 doesn\'t recognize mp3s does it?  I don\'t know what the point of that would be.
