New Computer On The Way!
« on: June 12, 2002, 10:28:18 AM »
Hi,

This is what I just had my company order so I can do some video editing and 3D graphic work at home.
I am using a Dell 333MGHZ now so this should be a real improvment.

I am not much of a PC gamer, maybe a demo download here and there, but with this new system I might give it a try.
What do you think? Do I have enough here to play some of the new and more system demanding games?

Dell 8200
DIM 8200 SERIES,P4,2.26AGHZ,533,NTWD,PRS
256MB PC800 RDRAM

64MB GEFORCE4 MX 420 W/TV OUT VIDEO
80GB 7200 RPM ULTRA ATA,43/8200
WIN XP PRO,ENG,DIM,TIED
10/100 PCI FAST ETHERNET NIC
48X MAX VARIABLE CD-ROM DRIVE
SOUNDBLASTER LIVE 1024 VOICES

Thanks!

Overall it\'s a very nice machine. Perhaps a little more RAM would be great, as Video pointed out. The gfx card isn\'t the fastest, but it isn\'t bad either - especially if you\'re not a big PC gamer. But to be honest I\'m not sure how \'bad\' it is compared to the bigger GF4 cards. :)

Thanks!

More RAM is already on the list. I almost ordered the 128 GEFORCE4.

You think this will be much of a problem?

If you aren\'t using it for gaming then the video card was fine.  You doing DV?

Yup. Almost all of our work is done on mini DV.  I have a lot of projects that I could work on at home after hours so I decided to upgrade and get something that will fill my video and 3D needs.

How much you looking to spend?

I have this one

Don\'t look at list.  You can get it for quite a bit less.

Just put it on a credit card.  Or better yet, Racer\'s credit card.

This one isn\'t DV, but it can do 24P.   Very nice.

Here is my camcorder.

That\'s a nice little unit. I\'ve rented it a couple of times. Does anyone make a consumer level DV unit?

mm, I\'m a Canon whore myself, so I\'d recommed that. The GL1 is nice. The Sony VX2000 is very popular too. But these cams are 3CCD and might not fit in your cheap-o range. ;) I\'m not too familiar with the cheaper cams, but Sony and Canon are nice brands. Perhaps JVC as well. :D

Oh, and I have to mention this cam.... A Panasonic prosumer DV cam with 24P, 30P and 60i switchable. For a list price of $3500. http://www.panasonic.com/PBDS/subcat/Products/cams_ccorders/f_ag-dvx100.html

I\'ll say this, if you can, ditch the MX GF4 card and go with a GF3 Ti card instead.  If that\'s not offerend, then go with a GF4 Ti card.  Just understand this, when it comes to the GF line, MX cards are crap and Ti is great.  Last I read, the GF3 Ti model stood toe to toe with the GF4 MX line.  Just food for thought.

Ryu is absolutely right go with the Ti series, also incresing the ram was a wise choice.

Thanks for the info.

Can you guys give a good source on the web to catch up on all the new boards.

As I said, I am using this system for 3D and video work but I would like to get into some PC gaming. Doom III anyone?

Thanks!
