I had just gotten to my seat, at the newly named Minute Maid Park, for a day game pitting the Cubs against the Houston Astros. I had just finished a pregame meal in the left field restaurant, so Sosa was the first batter I saw. I had my digital camera out, ready to catch my favorite player in mid-swing. As the pitch came, I focused, and took a picture. As I set the camera down, everyone around me pointed up towards the roof, and I realized the ball was headed our way. As it came down, I knew it was going over my head, but I also knew that there was nobody sitting there. As the ball flew past, I turned around and waited, arms outstretched for the ball to bounce back towards me. A huge bounce, combined with a tremendous amount of backspin sent the ball flying towards me, and I reached out and snagged the ball with my free hand. As I pulled it towards me some guy grabbed it and tried to pull it away, but I was not to be denied on this day. As I sat down, I realized that I had just caught a ball from my favorite player, but I also had a picture of him hitting the ball to me! Sammy later homered in the game, but the Cubs lost 5-4. I went home happy with some great pictures and an awesome souvenier.
The first picture is him fouling the ball off, and the second is me back at the hotel with my prize.
