Computer SCSI HD Question/Lost Files

Hi,

I have a dilemma. I have a SCSI drive that I moved from one computer to another to do some work.

I needed the available drive space on this drive. I did nothing to the drive (format, etc.).

When I put the drive back on the original computer the drive does not show up. When I go to disk management it shows the disk but it says that the disk is not allocated and it wants me to write a signature.

Please tell that the original files and folders are still there.

Well, now, that is unusual.  The whole point of SCSI is that it is fast and easy to install, and usually worry free.  

You didn\'t....
1)  try hooking it up to IDE didja?
2)  mix SCSI 1/2/3 device with a controller card not upto snuff?
3)  shake it or damage it in moving it?
4)  have to change any jumper settings (ie, SCSI ID numbers)?
5)  bring it close to a powered up screen or speakers while moving it (magnets.. a no-no).

1-5 = no.

I have to believe the files are still there somewhere. I did change the number of the drive. I thought I put it back to the right number though.

Try to install your SCSI card in another slot... I mean, change 2 of your components in the motherboard in order to install SCSI in another slot. This way, your PC will detect automatically the new device and, if the card and HDD are fine, and will recognize your HDD. At least, it\'s one of the things I would do.

Does writing a signature to the disk erase files on the drive. Is it just looking for the drive and it needs to assign it a drive letter?

No. Actually, you don\'t write a signature in your HDD, you write it in the motherboard (BIOS). The computer needs a name for that device and ask you to give a letter. But that name is not written in the HDD (even if you think it it this way), it\'s only in your BIOS. Files and data must be there perfectly kept.

If you still have this problem after the change of slot, try to use any UTILITIES program, like Norton Utilities or DiscWizard.
