PS2 DVD better than Xbox. PS2 DVD to support P-Scan!

Overall

The PS2 has the best remote and the most features (but just barely), but there are a lot of compatibility problems with the DVD playback of the machine. That is a big problem with the PS2, and something the Xbox does better, but Sony\'s system simply provides slightly better image quality and more features for your DVD buck.

Another great thing about the PS2 is that Sony does update the DVD drivers on a regular basis.  They\'ve added features and have more on the way (progressive scan!), while at the same time there hasn\'t been a peep out of Microsoft on the issue of improving the Xbox DVD capabilities.

If this comparison was done back when the Xbox first came out, it may have took away the prize in features as well as compatibility. But, Sony has been very aggressive with the PS2 and has made sure that it is up-to-date enough to compete with the Xbox, and as of right now the picture quality and features give it the edge.

The PS2 DVD player got me by for a while, but when it wouldn\'t play the first Bebop disk I knew it was time to go and get a stand alone DVD player.  Now I don\'t have to endure that annoying quick screen change blankout thing that Playstations tend to do when there\'s an edit between two segments... like the one I first noticed while playing the FFVII intro.

PScan = Progressive Scan, it improves picture quality. The drivers come with the DVD remote and are downloaded from the disk that comes with the remote to your memory card.

So its actually good to get the PS2 remote?, cuz i havent gotten one, so if it helps improve the DVD thingy then i guess ill get one........................................all i need now is a memory card

Also, a suggestion has been made to OPM for them to include driver updates in their monthly demo disk when appropriate.  I for one think this is an excellent idea.

Progressive Scan improves picture quality. The drivers come with the DVD remote and are downloaded from the disk that comes with the remote to your memory card.

Your television has to support 480p mode in order for a progressive DVD player to be of any use to you.  I do not believe that progressive capability can be added through a driver update for the PS2.  I think this is all foolish guesswork on the part of IGN or whoever.  Properly reading the field flags and converting DVD data into progressive video requires a dedicated chip to perform the task fast enough.  Even if you can get it working, it is often done poorly, in which case you\'d be better off going back to interlaced mode.  I\'ll believe a PS2 playing in progressive mode when I see it.

I\'m not sure if I remember this correctly, but before the ps2 was released in Japan, they were marketing it as a game console + dvd player comparable to higher end dvd players.  I remember them saying that the dvd would support p-scan out of the box, but once it came out, this wasn\'t the case.

I\'m being optimistic when I think that it should be possible, yet I too will be like coredweller, and believe it when i see it.

No, its quite possible since EE is doing the MPEG2 codec in software in realtime..
Did you know that most PS2 games actually support P-Scan, but the developers didnt turn this function on?

Gamers.com talked to the Socom team about P-Scan (Socom team said they were thinking of adding P-Scan support like Tekken 4, and now they have done it. Like Ryu said, it looks excellent!), and in that article Gamers.com said Sony was thinking of adding support for P-Scan via new drivers. But that was some months ago and now it seems to have happened..
