Wireless Networking Question
« on: June 18, 2002, 12:12:35 PM »
Hi,

I want to set up a wireless router. Right now at my house I have a Netgear 314RT router setup that has all four ports being used.

I want to to be able to use my laptop on the network.

Do I need to scrap the router I have now or can I add a wireless router to the existing router? I really only want to have the laptop go wireless.

Does this make sense?

Thanks!

ok heres what you do you need a wireless network card for one of your pcs plus one for your notebook this way you make a mini-network now on the pc with the wireless card(it must still have the original card still attached to the router)you turn on internet connection sharing which should be in network neighborhood
if you can get your notebook and that one pc to communicate the notebook should be able to use the pc\'s exisiting connection this way you dont have to mess with the router at all

I have an Apple airport connected to my router and it works just fine.

Just get a wireless hub like the airport or a similar device and connect it to the router. The only problem I\'ve encountered is that I seem to get different IP addresses from the wireless stuff than I get usually (supposed to get 192.xxx.xxx.xx but am getting 10.xx.xx.xx for all wireless stuff) so I had a little problem networking my workstation and my laptop together.

You just need to free up a port on the router :)

NetGear MR314 Cable/DSL Wireless Router with 4-Port Switch and Access Point

Linksys EtherFast Wireless Access Point + Cable/DSL Router w/ 4-Port Switch

These are the two units I\'m thinking of getting. I guess I can just wire up my systems as they are now and add wireless systems as needed.
Any preferences on which unit I should go for. I guess the biggest concern is how well these things work at different distances.

Thanks for the info.
