Hi Videoholic,

I know your in the video business. I\'ve been doing video for a while now at my own company.

We use Premiere and have been using it for many years. What software do you prefer for editing?

We\'ve been thinking of getting into Avid Xpress but I am not sure if it\'s much better than Premiere.

Everything is better than Premiere.

I have heard that Avid XPress is pretty good. We use Discrete Logic\'s Edit 5.0 where I am. It\'s alright. Doesn\'t allow for compositing with the version 5. Any time we want to do any effects we have to export to After Affects.

I also have Apple\'s Final Cut Pro on my laptop. It\'s pretty good. It allows for HD as well. You can do many layers of compositing on the timeline which is nice. On my laptop though render times are slow even though I have a G-4.

I was going to get a copy of XPress the other day to try it out. Maybe I will go ahead and do that.

You are obviously doing DV work correct? What kind of final product are you looking to do?

Yes I am.

I am always looking to better product so I am never satisfied with the quality and I always want better.

Most of our work consists of television commercials, sales videos, product demonstration, etc.

We also do a lot of 3D work which we try to incorporate into every production.

If you aren\'t doing high end stuff then I bet that Avid Express would be great for you. It may even be good with some higher end stuff as well. Not sure.

I have only played with the Premiere a little bit. Seemed rather limited when I messed with it.

Avid DV Xpress 3.0 is supposed to be great. It\'s a real time NLE application - it has some 100+ real time filters and effects, plus the familiar Avid workspace. I\'d definatly check it out if I was you.

Final Cut Pro 3 is also good.

By real time filters and effects are they requiring you to upgrade your graphics card?

Dunno, but I think they have some sort of \'recommend hardware\' list. But if you mean as in the gfx card is doing the realtime effects, then no - the CPU is.

That\'s interesting. Edit 6.0 requires you to buy a new targa card. I forget which one off the top of my head. It does everything uncompressed though so it\'s a different beast. It\'s what Discovery Channel is now requiring.
