I need some help with windows explorer
« on: July 04, 2002, 12:14:24 AM »
My home page is constantly being changed to istarthere.com. I have no freaking idea where that came from. However often I change it back, it always seems to replace itself into istarthere (I usually use yahoo.com as my home). Can anybody explain to me how/why this keeps changing, and how I might prevent this from happening? It\'s getting real irritating having to change my homepage every 10 minutes.

i assume that you when you click on I.E the first page you see is istarthere.com the easiest way to fix this is
tools>inet options>general>type the homepage you want>apply
if this dosent fix it then your computer is posessed.

do the above first, then try eliminating any spyware that might be on your comp.  it might be a hidden prog that\'s changin your homepage.

it\'s a trojan horse that companies upload into your comp that spies on you, I\'m not sure if any spyware out there changes your homepage, but it\'s worth a try.  To remove it go to download.com and get addaware.

Sounds good...I\'ll let you know what happens. From what I can tell, it came in sometime when I was downloading Britney Spears porno. Thats as far back as I can remember the problem going...

Huh? Um, I don\'t download porn...really. :shy:

you could also try checking your add/remove section under Control Panel.

Uninstall anything that looks strange etc. Stuff you know you haven\'t installed.

go to http://www.lavasoft.nu and download adaware.  This is the kind of crap that people can do to Windows.  Also some webpages will reset your homepage as well.  At least they could pre IE 6.0 and I don\'t know if they still can.

Yup Adaware is free, and it kicks ass. If you have Kazaa you can\'t delete a certain file though or it will stop working.

You can\'t delete the ezula main or whatever if you have kazaa. I\'ve done that about 3 times, arr, such a hassle.

What exactly is spyware? Do companies look at e-mails, view what you do on the internet? If so, how do I know if I\'m being spied on?

Basically everything you do on the net and on your computer is recorded to a file. Every now and then this file is sent off to somewhere without your knowledge. They then take that information to see what advertising worked best for you and what kind of ads you responded to etc etc. Basically its a marketing tool that sucks up to much memory.

Oh and even with Kazaa Lite you still cannot delete the file cdclint.dll or something like that, if you do its stops working. That files is a dummy so the program thinks the real spyware file is still there.
