Computer Woes/Win NT 4/HELP!!!
« on: July 08, 2002, 06:09:02 AM »
Ok,

I get back from my vacation and my business partner informs me that our NT4 machine will not boot and it is coming up with a boot record not found message.

When I try to do a repair using the disk it can not find WINNT and that I should insert the repair disk. Well I don\'t have a repair disk  and I need to get the files off the drive.

Is there a way to get this system up?

Do you think if I take the HD and put it on another system and set it up as a slave that I might be able to copy the files?

Thanks!

Ace

I hate to tell you this but most likely your HD went bad.  Either through an eletrical overload or just plain old failure.

The repair disk is just the Win NT/2000 CD that you installed it with.  Of course, every good admin has a bootable floppy.  You made one right?

Hooking it up as a slave to another bootable HD is probably your best choice at this point.

Hi EmperorRob,

Yes I have a boot disk as well as the installation disk. Man I hate NT4. I think I will connect it to another system and see what I can do get these files.

Thanks!

I thought we were the only ones still using NT 4.0.  Anyway, even if you didn\'t keep an updated Emergency Repair Disk around, doesn\'t your company have backup procedures?  A 12/24GB DAT drive isn\'t all that expensive, plus some decent backup software is a really really good investment, especially with NT.  I agree with Rob, it sounds like your HD went bad, otherwise it would just be telling you that a certain component is missing, corrupt command.com, etc.  There is a good chance you won\'t get your data back.

Get the backup, man...it\'s a mistake one shouldn\'t make twice.

Stop yelling at me. I\'m only kidding. :crying:

I\'ve been delaying backing up the system because it is on it\'s way out and I got kind of lazy. Well, not kind of, I was lazy.

Tomorrow I will give the HD a shot on another system.

Thanks!

Norton Ghost is pretty good for this kind of thing.  Speaking of which I need to update my backups at the house.

Agreed, that will work assuming the disk itself is healthy.
