Adan also finishes the academic year!
« on: July 12, 2002, 09:14:32 AM »
I\'ve just finished my first University year. After 9 months of studying and lots of projects and exams, my course finished this morning. I passed 8/9 of the subjects (one of them failed, I\'ll pass it in Sept ;) ). But today\'s exam was a little special: it was my first spoken english test. The professor and me were chatting for about 15 mins. I scored 8/10, so I think it\'s a nice score for a spanish newbie :) He said: Your english is really good, but you\'ve so much american-english expressions, do you see films in original version? Do you use internet to chat with americans?

I replied: A little only. Take a look at PSX2Central forums and see yourself. "I\'ll do" replied the man. So let\'s hope he comes :D

I must say that I study English Philology (English language in order to become an english teacher in high school or university), but the way we learn it is according to english of england. Ok, it doesn\'t change so much, but the accent and some rules are really different. For example, in the same spoken conversation, I would understand about 75% in english of england people, and perhaps less than 50% of an american guy.

So, holidays till 1st October :bounce:

Congrats man!! I\'ve done 2 years at uni now, but totally screwed up my second, so am retaking the entire year. I think it had something to do with the fact that I spent all year either in bed, or in the pub, still, I had fun doing it!!

what does he mean by saying you have too much american expressions?  I mean by using american expressions you sound more like a native speaker.

Indeed. When people study English they\'re taught ENGLISH, not American-English. :)

yeah but it is usually taught so that you can converss.  And if I were going to talk with someone I would want it to be the more powerfull one.  (not trying to put down other countries) but the USA is really the dominate country, it\'s like if I were learning french it wouldn\'t be the St Barthelemy dialect.

Well, that\'s a mood point. They teach it from where it originated... besides, it\'s not like a British person can\'t talk to an American, right? Personally I don\'t think it\'s much of a problem - if anything, most people would know how to \'switch\' to an American accent/style.

EDIT: But if you were to learn French you\'ll learn the "national" French - not the dialects and whatnot. So it is with English - you learn "the Queen\'s English" and not the bastardzations - even if those \'dialects\' are bigger.

Thanx buddies :) The matter is just like Samwise explained. We try to learn ENGLISH of England (Of course the differences between USA one and England one are not so big) but if they show us how to make a construction, or express an idea in English-Eng, they won\'t like a lot we speak as americans. Ok, I would love to dominate English, because i\'m pretty sure americans can understand perfectly to english and vice versa. All I need right now is practice my english (american or england one, I don\'t mind :) ) and this is the right place. Thanx a lot ;)

Dude, you probably speak better English than 50% of Americans.
