How can any console survive with (extremly) poor sales in Japan? I tell you one cannot one simply cannot.  - Clowd

Errrmm... wait a tick. Are you trying to tell me that the Sega Mega Drive was a complete flop because it tanked in Japan?

In short no - Clowd

No? No what? No you aren\'t going to tell me that? No the Mega Drive wasn\'t a failure despite it\'s bombing in Japan? No that it wasn\'t a success? Clarify, cause as it stands your contridiction just destroys your post that I quoted. How could the MegaDrive have been a success if consoles that tank in Japan have no hope of survival?

Well Bill Gates placed a 3.5 billion loss allowance on Xbox.  So far it is projected to lose about 2bil into summer 2003.

As it completely loses Japan it loses most of the game developers so I guess it has no chance.  It sucks anyway, a bunch of hype.  If you disagree, do some research on its components especially it\'s so amazing 750mhz chip (cheap POS).

I want it to fail A) **** Gates and MS and B) Get Sega to make PS2 games and C) Give Gamecube more market share

The Mega Drive was not a flop, but Sega and Microsoft are facing two completely different situations:

- Microsoft is an American company.
- The support from Japanese developers is still quite weak
- The market has grown bigger.
- Sales are very weak, despite its low price tag

I do agree however that you don\'t need to do well Japan in order to succeed. Although... it depends really what the Japanese developers think and if they\'ll support a dead-(American)-console overthere in the long run...

Thanks seven  I, and everyone else with half a brain know the reasons.. but that question was directed at Clowd becaue I wanted to hear HIS response. To see if HIS argument held any water (which it dosen\'t). Now all he\'s gonna do is copy your post and dodge the question.

argh, sorry about that. I admit, I didn\'t pay much attention when I replied, just taking part in the debate. :(

And quite honestly, I don\'t even care if Clowd would have been able to answer that question or not. I even have my doubts that he would have replied if I hadn\'t.

Anyway, the real reason why I did make a reply is because you brought up some very interesting points with the MegaDrive. It obviously didn\'t do very well in Japan, so the question is, why did it still get the support from them? Because Sega is a Japanese company? Because it did well elsewhere? Because the market wasn\'t big enough then to just jump console? Or because of other reasons?

Now, the final question is, what will Japanese developers do if Xbox completely dies overthere? Will they keep supporting it? Or, how good would sales elsewhere have to be that they don\'t just dump it?

It\'s very speculative, I agree - but quite interesting as I do believe the Japanese developers will play a very big role in the future success of Microsoft in this industry. What are your thoughts?

I could be wrong here, but doesn\'t the U.S. make up just a little less than half of the 20 billion dollar videogame industry?

I think that warrants enough reason to develope for the Xbox...but of course focus on more widely accepted consoles.<---That\'s what will always keep Xbox in 2nd or 3rd place.

Sonyfan - I dont know what the mega-drive is.  And if it bombed in Japan but was succesful elswhere Im sure it didnt last long.  My argument is that if a console doesnt get good sales in Japan its outlook for the future is dim.  aka Dreamcast

Megadrive=Genesis

It didn\'t do very well in Japan, but thrived in the U.S.  Third Party support was still great...granted that was then.  It was only Super Nintendo vs. Genesis...

Now, there are 3 consoles on the market so developers have a choice.  It makes sense to go with PS2, but is it worth it to invest time and money into GC and/or Xbox also?

U.S. Xbox> GC
Europe GC> Xbox...not sure about this one
Japan GC> Xbox
in regards to sales

If I\'m not mistaken, U.S. has become a strong force for sales and has picked up on the development side of things too.

Xbox has no future in Japan, but I do believe that the support it\'s garnered in the U.S. will carry it on...
