Found this on /.
http://news.zdnet.co.uk/story/0,,t269-s2120395,00.html

sounds cool, altough it feels like they haven\'t been working on the chip very long.

That\'s too soon they need more time to work out all the kinks and take another year to add in all the new developments that will ensue in that 12month span.

That article really has little to do with the PS3, it only mentions it once.  It basically just tells wha the Cell processor can do.

I don\'t think that processor has been confirmed for use in the PS3, has it? It\'s just rumors as far as I know.

Yeah but what about xbox2:rolleyes: .I think the chip is finished too soon to become a chip for the PS3 in 2006.

BTW:This thing sounds VERY POWERFULL.

While the processor\'s design is still under wraps, the companies say Cell\'s capabilities will allow it to deliver one trillion calculations per second (teraflop) or more of floating-point calculations. It will have the ability to do north of 1 trillion mathematical calculations per second, roughly 100 times more than a single Pentium 4 chip running at 2.5GHz.

How much floating point calculations can PS2 handle?

This is mighty impressive if you ask me. It would be still great to wait up though for some more detailed specs. Anyway, I think it\'s a given that this will be the new PS3 core. Sony (and Toshiba) are investing a lot of money into this - I doubt Sony has another chip up their sleaves.

Even more interesting is the question, how a next Xbox or Nintendo console would fair. I don\'t see any of the two competitors putting that much of money in R&D for a next gen console yet - I also doubt that the PC will be able to compete due to its old architecture. It will be interesting to see if Microsoft goes the same route with Xbox 2 and how they\'ll fair against this one...

I really hope MS doesn\'t go the same route with their next console as they did with the Xbox.  They can\'t if they ever want to be #1.

PS2 does has a Floating Point Performance of 6.2 GFLOPS.

Yep, and from the article above (and others), the Cell is rumoured to have a floating point performance of 1 TFLOPS. That would be 162 times more than the EE has. Hmm, on second thought.. didn\'t we expect more? Maybe yes, but then it\'s only a peace of silicon and in its state only existant on paper so who knows how powerful the end result will turn out...?

I do agree however that Microsoft will have to go the other route. With Nvidia signed up, I wonder though how far they\'ll go. And - shouldn\'t we already be hearing things from the MS camp? It\'s awfully quite... which also lets me suggest that the next console will be some PC hybrid... which infact, isn\'t a bad thing due to low and easy development, but could turn out to be a mistake where performance is at stake. We\'ll see though how fast the PC platform evolves though... when PS2 was designed at the time, no one thought PCs would be able to match it, yet the PC has already gone pass the PS2\'s capabilities, if not in all areas though.

Well if they make Cell a CPU only and add a GPU that`s state of the art in `06 , then it`s not too early.
Also they could link 2 or more cells together to get more power if needed.

I can imagine PS3\'s alternative VUs.

This would be radical new technology we are talking about here.  If Microsoft (or anyone else) wants to match it they will have to do the same radical approach.  But if Microsoft are just going to leave it up to NVIDIA to do another PC GPU, then chances are it will fall behind.

I wonder just how serious Microsoft are.  This is what Sony do best, forcing everyone else to change their tactics.

But Microsoft don\'t need to spend so much money on a new chip.. it\'d probably be cheaper just to buy Square/Enix/EA/Everyone ;)
