Anybody know anything about Routers

I have a cellpipe 50a router, and I can\'t figure out how to configure it to open a port for file sharing and whatnot.

yer router will assume the IP given to you by yer ISP (ex. 24.16.208.46)

then it will assign IP\'s to yer PC\'s (usually in the 192.168.x.x range)

open up port 21 to forward to whatever PC(s) you want

anyway,

I found something called NAT
in NAT I can set static maps (which the book on the router seems to describe what your saying)

It has the following fields:

Dst Port #=
Protocol = (TCP or UDP)
Loc Port #=
Loc Adrs = (presumably 192.168.1.2)

dst port = destination port
loc port = local port

make them both 21

protocol is TCP (transmission control protocol aka TCP/IP)

UDP is more for norvell netware networks (user datagram protocol)

loc adrs = local address - make this the pc you want the info to route to.  you can find out the IP of yer local machine by going to a command prompt and typing ipconfig

btw, NAT is Network Address Translation  (way to give a machine access to a network)

it might make this easier if u tell me what progam yer trying to get running.

1.) AIM/ICQ with direct connect..
2.) MIRC with DCC
3.) Edonkey/Overnet with http://www.overnet.com

aim/icq will stop at any firewall, they are bitches to get to work

youll have to find out specifically what port mirc is trying to use, and open it

same with edonkey i presume, although ive never used it

yer best bet is to use an FTP program such as cuteFTP or wsFTP or bulletproofFTP if yer gonna transfer files to people

they are designed much more secure AND easier to use

and AIM direct connect seems to be working (actually, It just did not with another person) so nevermind that

one last question
what is the difference between
dst port = destination port and
loc port = local port

dest port is where its coming from/ going to

loc port is yer machine

AIM must use port 21 then

you always wanna use yer WAN (router) IP

the 192.168.x.x IP is an internal IP and cant openly be seen outside yer network

thats the IP you would give to someone if you were running an FTP, and use port 21 (or whatever else u specify) and yer router will direct them to yer machine

I know the IP of my machine, but there are 2 places for ports
the Dst and Loc port #\'s
how can I tell what my local port number is..

The IP of my computer is 192.168.1.2 however the loc port is differnt alltogether

FTP (file transfer protocol) is port 21 by default  but yer ISP might be scanning that port if they dont want you running an FTP

so use 27015 which is the default quake 3 port if you want to

you can make them different, but that complicates things

if you wanna open a basic FTP that people can connect to, or even use thier Ie browser to download files from you, get a program called Serv-u

very easy to use and very secure

if yer using winXP, it has it own default piece of shit firewall protection, turn that shit off as it will cause nothing but problems
