VHS won because Sony tried to implement to many standards and rules when using the Betamax format. Its kind of like how Nintendo had so much BS involving cartridges so most developers moved to Sony and their CDs.

dvd\'s get scratched too, easily, tapes last for ever dvd\'s on the other hand one nick and its ruined forever ever.

Tapes don\'t last forever. What if your VCR eats them or some crap. Happened to me lots of times.

DVD has so much features that makes it so much better than VHS. True the VHS has sh!tload more movies than DVD. But the advantages the DVD has is:

better sound quality
better picture quality
no rewinding (i love this one.:D )
Extra features (music videos, documentaries,photo galleries, etc.,)
Easier to carry around
Extended scenes
Deleted scenes
DVD-ROM games
More space on DVD for movie (no double or more tapes)

The only thing the DVD doesnt do better than VHS is the ability to record.

there is prolly more but as you can see the DVD is just a lot more technologically (sp?) advanced than the outdated VHS. ;)
