Broadband VS Dial-up
« on: August 28, 2002, 01:47:41 PM »
Now, I know that there willl be some games that dont require broadband, but my question is; If you are playing  an online game with someone on dial-up, how much are they going to be lagging?  I mean, If you are playing TMB, will you be able to tell a difference.  That would kind of suck, for both parties if thats the case.

It also matters on how many 56kers are in the room. 1 will make it lag a little but 2 or more in the same place id pick different room.

I see the latency circles, but how do you know if someone is 56k or bb?

Am I to assume a red is 56k?

Yeah, they are like what you see on blizzard.  5 green circles.  If it goes down a bit they turn yellow, then red if only one circle lit.  This pic is odd with the 1 green circle..

But they\'re in the player\'s profile, in the server info.. or where?

I don\'t believe 56k users will make BB users lag.  The only problem will be for 56k users playing against BB users.  Take SOCOM for example, they only allow BB users to play because ping is everything in a FPS and the average 56k user would just get frustrated, complain, or return the game saying it doesn\'t work.

Frankly it was a smart idea to make SOCOM BB only.  When I play Team Fortress you can easily spot the 56kers who come on the server - 200+ ping compared  to my 35 ping.  I don\'t lag, they do.  It also gives BB an unfair advantage if say two people go head to head with the same weapon - the BB guy will always win.  Games like this are all about latency.

As far as other games go like Madden - the 56kers will "lag" a little, but the BB people shouldn\'t at all.  I have been playing online games for over 5 years and its always the same whether its strategy, fps, sports or rpg.  56kers do not lag out a server - they just lag themselves.

i have dsl, but i still have an extremely high ping an average of 270 on CS and 550 on americas army. (tho i would think that 550 ping is very good for someone living 5000 miles away from the server).

Oh yeah that reminds me - distance to the server is key too.  The farther away you are the worse your ping gets "usually".  When I was playing Frequency last night the server was based in San Franciso and I was hitting 65... not bad from the east coast.  Though when I played TFC the other night on a server in AZ I was getting a 200 ping go figure...

yes, the higher the humber of hops yer packets must travel, the higher yer ping

BB does not gaurantee you a low ping

anytime you play on a server cross-country yer gonna have a higher ping

It does promise you one thing though - fewer if any disconnects ;)

In madden is there two different servers a east and a west, (explaining the EAST-West rooms) so If I\'m a east coaster should I stay in the east for a better ping time?

ah hah! I understand now ;)  I guess that would explain the choices of US east 1, 2, 3, and so on.  But, lets say I was to pick west coast.  How much of a difference would I notice at socom?  would it even be noticable with a cable connection?
