What the hell is Fight Club about?

Friggen hell, I am not having a great time with movies lately. First Mulholland Drive now Fight Club.

Someone please explain.

a guy with a split personality kicks his own ass, inspires other people to join with him, and fight eachother.  The evil part of him creates a terrorist group and they blow up buildings

No, no, no, you guys have it all wrong.

The movie seemed to be trying to prove something, like, have some sorta point to prove. I thought it might have been symbolic in a consumer sorta sense. I dunno.
