I have a 1000+ Ping, after 1 year, I now know why.

I have just found out the crap in my system is a win modem, yes the piece of shit that was made poorly and runs through the cpu, I was told by the owner of jolt.co.uk that my ping problems lyed there and he gave me a link to a £30 external modem so Im going to get that, I am sick of crap pings.

Well I just spoke with my Dad and he might be able to get me a free V90 internal from work ( he\'s the manager ) they get stuff so cheap its not funny.

Yeah, he\'s very good friends with the owner who is a millionaire so a few quid is nothing to him, he even paid for a company car for him to use on holiday. So lets hope he gets a good one soon, if somthing good happens I\'ll probally drag this thread back to life.

I don\'t know really, but when you play online games your ping tells you basically how good it\'s going to run, the lower the ping the beter the game will run 150 - 250 is good for 56k, under 100 is BB and ADSL standard.

"ping" is a networking term

basically yer computer sends a packet of information to a server and records in milliseconds how long it takes to come back

start a dos prompt inside windows (click start - run)
then type cmd and hit enter
then type cd ..  to get to the root directory
then type ping http://www.yahoo.com or any other server and you will see yer ping times

another good command is tracert
type tracert http://www.yahoo.com and youll get a list of "hops" that packets takes to get to its destination.

I prefer external to internal modems. I have a internal and it sh@ts me. Gives me IRQ problems with my Network card, a External modem users the irq that the port its on. So you don\'t use up more then needed. I\'ve got nearly ALL my pci slots filled, I\'ve got 1 free below my AGP card, most of the time the AGP slot shares the same IRQ address as the first PCI slot. So I’m not using it. .
I would of got a external modem, but i didn\'t have the cash at the time... I\'ve never had any problems with them. Another good thing about external modems is because they have there own power supply, they don\'t drain power from your computer. As well as if you have more then 1 computer, you can connect them to it without having to have your computer on.
