The :-) Celebrates its 20th Birthday
Twenty years ago, Scott Fahlman, an IBM researcher who has devoted his career to the development of artificial intelligence, taught the on-line community how to smile.
On September 19, 1982, in an on-line message on a Carnegie Mellon University bulletin board, Fahlman coined what is now known as an emoticon, using :-) to express light heartedness.
Of his moment of inspiration, Fahlman says "I\'ve certainly spent 10 times as much time talking with people about it as I did coming up with it in the first place".
Happy Birthday :-)
