Looks like more ps2 probs for me :(
« on: September 21, 2002, 01:55:08 PM »
Let\'s start off by saying since this is ps2 number 2..I have been VERY careful with keeping it clean..not leaving discs in when I power it up..etc..etc..

GT3..doesnt load at all..the game has some minor scratches but nothing serious..plus I played it a few days ao and it was fine.

GTA3..when it does even load..I can only play for about 2 minutes b4 the colors get all funky and the game freeze\'s *error loading the GTA dvd* pops up at the bottom.

TMB..same thing as GT3..was playing it last night..no problems. I put the game in today and in the main menu..no sound..I load anyway..funky colors and none of the control buttons do wat they are supposed to. Well..each button works..but its like I have change the configuration when its still the same. Also, no sound in game either.

Madden2k3 works fine..it just takes forever for it to start up now.

I have just gone through and check my other games...they all work fine.

I was thinking that maybe the lense needs to be cleaned? I keep all of my discs clean and cleaned them again after figuring out they werent working properly. Anyone have any ideas?

O yea..and of course..Im out of warranty, just like the first time.

How long did this second PS2 last you before it started giving you problems?  Just curious.

I\'d suggest trying to clean the lens of the system.  It\'s a very good thing to do every so often.

I have had this one since october of last year. Can I clean the lense myself or is this something I should send the ps2 to a repair shop for?

I would pay attention to the electronics you have around your PS2.  Big speakers, vaccuums, blenders... There are alot of electronic devices that have bad filters on them, and ofcourse speaker magnets are never good.  If you have something running alot around it, it can actually damage other dvices.  I good test is turning a blender on while watching TV.  I have seen some tv\'s go to ant races until the blender is turned off.  My advice is:  cut back on the margaritas man ;)

I sit the ps2 on the table when I play and move it back to the TV when off.

Just buy or borrow a lens cleaning disc. Then if it still doesn\'t work your ps2 is probably knackered.

Advice, don\'t buy your next PS2 from somewhere in the US.  I think it has the highest breakage rate in the world.

You want one from Australia.  I don\'t know anyone who\'s had ANY problems.

Not that I helped :)

You know when mine went bad and it was under warranty I really wanted a new one but Sony fixed mine instead and I\'ve had only a few problems since then and they\'ve been DVD movie related.

I think you\'re actually better off having one repaired since these taiwanese crap-boxes come off the line with a 35% failure rate.

might sound weird , but is te room you got it in ever cold??? it just i used to ahve my window open in my boat during winter, and my old ps1 was a bitch to make play early in the morning, maybe the lens got frosted over or some shit ( and i dont mean actual ice on it) i mean like it had a small bit of vapour in it, and it mists it up

Before my console totally died and it was giving me minor problems I use to pop the top off of  it and clean the lens with a Q-tip and alcohol. You might want to try that. You might not.

Also I have read that lens cleaners scratch the lens. Because they use small brushes to go over the lens. I never use lens cleaners, I always clean the lens with a Q-tip and alcohol using small circular motions.

Do you have any tips for me? Or is it basically removing 6 screws to get the top off? ANything I need to be explicitly careful of?

Ya its easy you take 6 screws out. Just be cafeful when you go to pull the top off. There is that little metallic looking strip that you don\'t want to break. It runs from the eject and power buttons to the underside of the PS2.

You \'ll have to pull the top towards the front a little to slide it over the controller ports & disc tray and you can see that metallic strip I was talking about. Just lay the top over to your right if the front of the PS2 is facing you and you won\'t have any problems.

Once you have the top off you need a small screwdriver to remove the 4 screws that hold the cd lens cover on. It has a sticker on it that says *Danger of lens radiation when on*. Remove that and you\'ll see the lens.

Then just take a Q-tip swabed with alcohol and gently clean the lens eye. Use very small circular motions. And don\'t apply a lot of pressure. Give it a minute or so to let the alcohol evapporate then put it all back together.

If all this sounds too complicated then I suggest taking it to someone, but it\'s really not that difficult. Again just be sure not to lift the PS2 top straight up and break that Eject Power metallic wire. You have plenty of play so you shouldn\'t have much to worry about.

Good Luck :)
