Another HDTV question
« on: September 22, 2002, 05:50:57 PM »
Alight the tv I\'m getting only has 420i, 420p and 1080i as the available resolutions. I was wondering if I added a HD converter/reciever whatever you call it would that enable the other modes such as 720 and 960 or do they have to come built into the tv?

Wow that\'s nice indeed but what resolution is that running is that 420p cuz if it is that looks damn good.  Though it\'s probably higher.

*Ok I check the resolution of the pic and that solved on question but what about my original one any help please?:crying:

My box I bought open box at CC for 400 bucks.  THis was back when they were 550.  They are about 450 now.  It\'s the RCA-DTC100

I think Kirath said he has the same box.  I can\'t remember.

IT will change multiple frequencies into 1080i.  Which was the original question.

So everything that comes out of it becomes hi-rez.  At least I think it\'s 1080i..  I\'m not sure if it\'s 720p or 1080i.

I do know that each network has it\'s own standard.

FOX blows at 480p
NBC and CBS are 1080i
and ABC is 720p

So your box will either change them or your tv will have to be able to do them all.

What kind of box are you buying for the set?

I think Vid just breaks into peoples houses and "borrows" all his equipment.  I just don\'t buy the whole, "I got this 3000 dollar projector for 5 bucks and a half eaten ham sandwich" story. ;)

Actually, I havent really looked into yet. I have wayyy to many things I need to do before buying one. Credit is an option, but I have already learned not to consistently use our cards when we want something unless we have at least %75 of the cash to send off the next day.

Anywho..I take it you are more than happy with the RCA? I guess that is where I will start my search when Im ready.

Well that kinda sucks then cuz the tv only does the lowest mode(420p) and the highest(1080i).  As for the box I\'m not sure yet I\'m just concentrating on getting the tv I have almost all the money for it. It\'s probably the bottom or fo the barrel HDTV but anything\'s a hell of a lot better than the piece of shiznit RCA tv I have now.

After i get it then I\'ll look around for a box.  Anyone know of a good place online to get a deal on a box for a reasonable price?

That one only decodes OTA signals. Which is fine.  But mine does Direct TV as well.  That gives Me HBO, SHowtime, and HD.Net all in HD as well.

Here\'s another shot comparing, not as dramatic as Vid\'s but you\'ll get a better idea if you\'ve never seen HDTV.

Look dead center in the crowd of the HD pic, see the blonde in the white top?  You can\'t see her in the NTSC one.

edit- Luckee Vid\'s saying that HD receiver can only decode over the air (OTA) signals, as in antenna on the top of your roof.  The real deal is satellite such as DirecTV or Dish Network.  Those cost more AND you have to pay a monthly fee but if you\'re an avid movie junkie and you really wanna take advantage of your new HD resolutions don\'t waste your money on a box that can only get just 4 networks that are over the air (Fox, ABS, CBS,  NBC).
