Home Theater ppl...DVD...
« on: October 24, 2002, 02:00:34 PM »
Welp, my DVD player finally took a shit and I suppose I could try to have it repaired, but Id rather upgrade now and repair it sometime in the future and keep it as a 2nd unit.

Any suggestions on a nice DVD player around $400 or lower?

If you\'re planning to spend up to $400, then I guess you\'re looking for a model that is much better than average.  A basic servicable interlaced model can be had for $99.00 - $150.00.

You need to define what features the player has to have.  Do you need progressive output, or do you not have a tv that supports it?  Which type of digital audio cable do you need, if any?  Do you care to have separate RCA outputs for each channel (to build a poor man\'s home theater) or is that unimportant?

This is basically what Im looking for and it seems to be the front runner so far and Im saving quite abit of coin too!!

There is also a denon that I saw in a local store today, but I forget the model, it was $120 more though for essentially the same features as the panasonic except the audio is supposed to be better.

You can\'t go wrong with Panasonic and Toshiba, but Denon is geared more toward higher-end theaters.

[snobery]Nono, he asked Home Theater guys what our opinion was.  A real HT nut wouldn\'t give a Sony player a 2nd look unless it said ES somewhere on the box.[/snobery]

I\'m sure the DVP\'s are solid players but Panasonic has made leaps and bounds in the DVD market such as the scaling features in the RP-91 and great progressive playback at a low price.

I dunno about the new Pana\'s, but in the past they haven\'t been all that and a bag of chips IMO. I\'d go for a Pioneer...

I am in the market for a new DVD player myself. I really like the Denon units. The one I have been looking at is $499.00 though. I think the Sony units look cheap unless you go really high end.

The one that crapped out is a sony, plus I was never all that impressed with it in the first place. At least it played VCD\'s and SVCD\'s

Do a little pricewatch search before you go and buy the darn thing.  Hopefully you just used crutchfield as a source for a picture cause their prices certainly aren\'t the best.

By the way, I am getting a new subwoofer.  A buddy of mine works for Boston Acoustics and is giving me a nice deal.  I wasn\'t going to go BA, but I can\'t pass this up.  I am getting a brand new 1000 watt sub, their top of the line, for 300 bucks.

This unit right here.

Should be sweet since I have been without one for almost a year now.  Damn do I miss it.  Next I need to upgrade the rest of the speakers.

In the UK we have a magazine that does Home Cinema reviews and it gives them various star ratings out of five. Maybe you have an equivelent in the US that you could look at for ideas?

I wouldn\'t be buying it if it wasn\'t so damn cheap.  Can\'t pass up 75% off with no tax or shipping.

My neighbors are going to hate me though.  :)

Please dont buy a Sony DVD player.
While the Panasonics have done nothing buy increase in quality, the Sony\'s, other than the ES, have done nothing but drop in quality over the last few years. Shoddy features with a useless remote, in an ugly box.
The lowest I would say go is a Panasonic.
If you want a serious DVD player, go with a Pioneer Elite or a Denon.
The Pioneer Elites play both SACD and DVD audio,
Which is another really cool thing.
