Press release: Paris, October 30, 2002 - Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) announces today its plan of launching of the play in network on PlayStation® 2 for Europe, Australia and the other territories STAKE.

This advertisement of SCEE follows upon successes in the United States and Japan of the launching of the plays in network on PlayStation 2 at the beginning of this year. In these two areas, the PS2 is now the first platform of play of console on line.

In North America, SOCOM: US Navy Seals, first play on line integrating the vocal communication between players, and Madden NFL 2003 of Electronic Arts, became successes which attract hundreds of thousands of regular players. In Japan, Final Fantasy XI, the play in line multijouor of Squaresoft, already conquered in a few months of many monthly subscribers.

The service of play in network SCEE will be launched in partnership with suppliers of access Internet high flow, in spring 2003 for the United Kingdom, then will be wide during 2003 in Germany, France, Spain, Australia, Switzerland, with the Scandinavian countries, in Belgium, in the Netherlands, in Italy and the other countries of Europe.

The key points of this new solution of play in network PlayStation 2 of SCEE are as follows:

 A pack of connection, including/understanding an adapter network (Network Adaptor) and a disc of utilities, proposed at a price close to that of a play PlayStation 2. This pack, distributed by the usual network of sale, will make it possible to the holders of PlayStation 2 to reach the plays multijouor on line through the connection high flow of their choice.

 As from spring 2003, left a range of plays on line distributed through the usual network, with titles such as SOCOM: US Navy Seals, Hardware, Destruction Derby 4, Twisted Metal Online, Frequency 2, My Street, ATV Offroad, the World of Blue the 2003 and World Rally Championship Online, produced by the studios Sony Entertainment Computer.

 An entirely new version PlayStation 2 of Everquest, the greatest world success of the plays on line, produced by Sony Online Entertainment.

 Tony Hawk 3, who includes/understands already functions networks, and Tony Hawk 4, launched as of this November, which will develop them significantly.

 A whole range of enthralling plays in network produced by the editors partners such as Capcom, Electronic Arts, Activision, Take 2 and Eidos.

In connection with this plan of launching of the plays on line, Chris Deering, the President of SCEE declared: « In spring 2003, those which will have PlayStation 2 and access high flow of one of our partners network will be able to acquire an adapter network (Network Adaptor) and to thus reach a broad selection of plays multijouor on line. It will be simple to install, pleasant to play and accessible. We are very happy to announce that the solution in line PlayStation 2 rests on a close cooperation between suppliers of access Internet, our own studios of development, the community of the editors partners and the distribution network. Our philosophy is to have a diversified and opened platform which will allow the companies of contents, the editors of plays and the gates of the suppliers of access to diffuse the broadest selection of innovations in the field of the leisures and plays on line. »

To have a protected environment on line is an in the long run crucial concern for the players as for the content providers. The platform network in line PlayStation 2 will profit from its own Système of Dynamic Authentification Network (IN: Dynamic Network Authentication System) which will guarantee this environment made safe with the trade partners and the users.

Phil Harrison, vice-president in charge of the development within SCEE declared « I am certain that the combination of an opened platform, bringing the best

Yeah does seem broadband only, but I have no idea why it has to be that way. Anyway it won\'t bother me, and I don\'t need the network adaptor either just the games :D

FFS Sony hurry up.

IGN says:

October 30, 2002 - French gaming site PlayFrance, among others, appears to be jumping the official gun a trifle on the news of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe\'s plans to bring PlayStation 2 online gaming to PAL territories. According to the report, SCEE plans to bring the Network Adaptor and several online games to market in the United Kingdom in the spring of 2003, with continental Europe and Australia to follow by the end of 2003.
The European Network Adaptor will apparently be identical to the American version of the peripheral, with support for both broadband and narrowband connections, and ship with a similar utility/demo disc. The following games are planned for release with the Adaptor when it hits the UK:

SOCOM: US Navy SEALs
Destruction Derby 4
Twisted Metal Black: Online
Frequency 2
My Street
ATV Offroad Fury 2
This Is Football 2003
World Rally Championship Online

When contacted, Sony Computer Entertainment America representatives had no official comment on the story or the previously-unannounced games discussed therein. Look forward to the official word from SCEE in short order.
