Does online gaming eat up bandwidth?
« on: November 03, 2002, 02:53:39 AM »
Like, my broadband account is capped at 5gb a month. Does online gaming eat up bandwidth allowances?

Like, if you played a game online for like an hour, how much would that use?

I am talking about PS2 Online, not PC, if it makes a difference.

Not really.I\'m pretty sure the only bandwidth that is used is for sending and recieving packets.Just make sure you don\'t use all your bandwidth on d/l porn so you\'ve got some left for gaming. ;-)
I swear this post is not spam!!!!Listen,if this post was spam, would I do this? [spreads mayonaise over bread]

It uses bandwith, just like any other traffic on the line.

BTW, capping sucks major donkey balls. I\'m glad we don\'t have that here. :sconf:

The reason why all broadband is capped in Australia at the moment (you can get uncapped accounts which are pretty expensive) is because of the ratio of AUS/USA sites.

In the USA, most people would be visiting sites and servers in the USA, which doesn\'t use as much bandwidth compared to AUS getting sites from servers in the USA.

With that being said, I think this thread has run its course.

You got your answer, correct?  Aussies suck and Americans rock!!

I just have something to add.

Racer, what you said about AU/US traffic would be true in most any country - 95% of my Internet traffic goes to the US and thus makes my ISP pay for each gb of foreign traffic. But we still have flatrate (no capping) - I\'ve had both cabel and DSL, and had no capping on either. So I don\'t understand why things would be different in Australia. Perhaps you just pay less pr. month? Dunno really. :surprised

So, it could just be an excuse ISP\'s use?

Ok, for example, if I download something from an AUS server, which is quite often as most sites have mirrors, then I get like a DL speed of 500k a second, yet when I download from a US site, it goes at around 100k. I only have cable.

Yeah, basically. But it makes sense from a business point of view - the less traffic they have to pay for, the better. But it sucks for the consumer (if s/he uses more than that).
