Dirty secret acknowledged as Polyphony reaches milestone.

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan yesterday allowed a lucky few a first glimpse of Gran Turismo 4, the long-awaited driving sim from genre masters Polyphony.

According to reports surfacing overnight, the game is currently 50% complete, with most of the tracks built, and most of the cars, albeit without bespoke applied physics fully rendered. Trial Mountain and Apricot Hill were shown.

Furthermore, developers on hand spoke of, for the first time, Gran Turismo 3’s dirty secret. “We have taken great pains to ensure the AI in Gran Turismo 4 will be very much improved,” one was heard to say. “This has been at the forefront of our thinking and we are pleased with the results so far.”

Expect to see a glimpse of the game at next year’s E3, hopefully with all its online functionality in place.

For the record, Sony has already confirmed that GT4 will indeed be an online racer

It actually sort of was. They said they would improve and it was a bit improved over GT2. They didn\'t run into walls as much.

I can see Living-In-Clips point though, by the time you get a 1300hp GT-One race car they just don\'t offer ant sort of challenge. It would be nice for it to determine what car you\'ve entered and then put you up against your equal.

I swear (even though in GT3 you couldn\'t see your opponents hp) they only ever put you up agains standard power GT racers and never tuned themselves up at all.

This must be remedied for GT4.

Oh and I want a rolling road feature too!!

Can\'t you edit the AI with those dex or hex drives? I know you can change the cars shape and specs.

Hmm, I wonder who got to see the game? Some impressions should leak out, its one of the biggest game series ever.

I wonder how much more efficient they can get it to run considering GT3 only used 25% of PS2s theoretical power.

I want to see some screens.

Good lord, can\'t they ditch Trial Mountain and give us some new friggen TRACKS!!! If the graphical model is completely different, with weather, and time effects, then I don\'t mind having the same tracks, just as long as they look different.

Weather/Time settings have been mentioned. I also heard some stuff about dashboards being in, not sure about that though.
Car damage has been on Yamauchi’s list ever since GT2 but he cant put it in before the car manufactures gives him the green light.

MORE TRACKS and intensive damage should be a must. I understand them keeping in some classics like Laguna and Trail Mountain but for sure have A LOT more new tracks come on the scene. They\'ve got to keep the game fresh every time.
Or else it will end up like THPS.
