Major PC problems
« on: November 08, 2002, 10:56:42 PM »
I don\'t know if anyone has had a similar problem... I\'m guessing at least someone has, this is Windows after all...

But anyway, my PC won\'t show my system files.  When I open up My Computer (or hit the button for it on my keyboard) I get nothing but a blank window.  I\'ve ran an antivirus program, checked with Ad Aware, restarted my PC a million times and I can\'t seem to fix it.  My search for answers on the net always seem tp turn up empty.

My Event View doesn\'t show anything wrong, the things just won\'t show.

ANY help anyone has would be appreciated... it\'s driving me crazy.

I\'m about to just say screw it and switch to Linux.  Problem is, none of the games I play support the OS. :(

UPDATE:  It seems that when I make the folders view like classic folders, it works.  I would use that, but I don\'t like the thought of having something corrupt on my system and just letting it be.

Anyone know of a way to fix it so both web view and the classic view work?

What windows do u have.. Check folder options etc. May be something in there is changed. (doubtfull though)

Just reinstall windows. Dat fix it. Sounds like a system file is corrupt etc.

nataku r u referring to the files located in the "windows" folder if so then just select tools> folder options> and set one the options to "show hidden files".

Sorry I should have been clearer.  I have Windows 2000.

When you open up Windows Explorer, you have two panels.  The left shows your drives and whatnot, the right shows your files when you select a drive.

When I select a drive, nothing ever shows up in the right panel.  It just stays blank.  The same thing happens with My Computer, the files, and the drives themselves, never show up.

I took some screen shots of it so you can see.  These are My Computer screens, not Windows Explorer.

Doesn\'t work

Works

Doesn\'t work Tyrant. :(

I tried to do the repair option in the windows 2000 setup, but that doesn\'t work either.

I REALLY don\'t want to reinstall, I\'m sick of it... I get all these programs installed and a month later Windows 2000 does it\'s thing and randomly corrupts a major file and you have to start all over again.  You shouldn\'t have to reinstall your OS every 6 months.  It\'s such a pain in the ass.  Windows is the biggest POS I\'ve ever had the displeasure of using. :rpissed:

Not to mention the fact that I can\'t even access my files, so I can\'t go back up some of the bigger downloads like the CS mod, HL update, NS mod, or other setup programs on a CD to make the reinstall easier.  Not to mention my 1GB of MP3s I have.  :rpissed:

Heh, another great MS product.

UPDATE:

I just got done formatting and, suprise suprise, it\'s STILL causing problems.  Not the same, but instead of not being able to see the files, it freezes after I browse a couple folders and I\'m forced to end task it, then restart. :rpissed:

I truely hate Windows.  I\'d wipe my HDD and install Linux if any of my software I have working for the thing.

Try using Win98/XP instead.

Get XP, I\'ve haven\'t had any software problems with it.. I get the hardware problem here and there. Latest problem was my ide cables were popping out, so i cut off these plastic bits that were stopping them from staying in.. Kinda hard to explain.

I would get XP, but I\'m broke as hell.
I looked at newegg.com, Home Edition is $93... that\'s not bad.  Maybe for chirstmas or something.

Anyway, I think I fixed the problem.  Before I formatted, I backed up a lot of programs install files, so I wouldn\'t have to search around and download them again.  Before all this happened I was going to change some icons on my PC, make it look more customized.  The ones I had downloaded I had burnt to the CD too, and I couldn\'t access the Icons folder I had put on it without it freezing.  I could get to any other folder on my PC, just not that one.  I deleted it, so hopefully that will be the end of it.

Another thing... I was wondering what one of these were safe to get rid of.

Those are things that startup when my PC does, if anyone didn\'t know.

Get Advanced Administrative Tools. it allows u to clean your registry and remove startup programs from your icon tray safely. It backs up any thing u change. Great program.

You could remove the nerocheck and Windvd patch.. but u don\'t really need to. There not icons, just hidden apps etc.
