Perhaps the most amazing F1 graphics I\'ve seen...
« on: November 18, 2002, 09:08:58 AM »
Grand Prix Challenge - by Atari developed for PlayStation 2. (Same developers responsible for LeMans 24 hour on Dreamcast).

The game is apparently pushing between 200\'000 and 300\'000 polygons at 50/60 fps, full anti-aliased with no pop up or framerate drops. Don\'t believe me? Download the following video - it surely blew me away, especially knowing that it\'s running on PS2 and out on the 23rd of November in Europe.

AMAZING In-game Footage - 14 MB - MPEG format

Some screens:

Because these screens have been doubted, the executive producer of the game has answered many many questions on the GranTurismo forums. If you want to read up on them and find out more about this game, I have posted everything in one thread on my site:

http://www.conceptics.ch/msgboard/thread.php?ID=115&ForumID=20

Any comments? What are you thoughts? I\'ve never been that big of a fan where F1 games are concern, but this game really looks amazing and after reading the comments by the developer, I have fate that this game will deliever, not only in the graphics department, but also in gameplay!

Just a note on the antialiasing - I can\'t let too many of our techniques out, but the game runs at 640X960 pixel resolution - realtime supersampling. Almost all \'normal\' PS2 games are still using 640X480 and the original early ones were a two raw fields of 640X224 - so we have a 4X improvement in resolution compared to early PS2 games and 2X most of the current others (including games on other console platforms).

Maybe I\'m confused with another PS2 F1 game, but recently
I read about some technique like that in a Formula 1 game.
The only downside was they didn\'t have the FIA license.
Does this game indeed HAVE the 2002 FIA license ?

It must have, or else they wouldn\'t be allowed to have all the real cars in. Without the FIA licence, the game would have to contain made up teams with made up drivers, and there would be no way that they would be allowed to use realistically accurate liveries/helmet designs.

That\'s what might put me off buying it, especially seeing that it has "Challange" in the title.

accoarding to the developers, it\'s something inbetween (sim/arcade). He goes on and said that on the highest difficulty setting, it could very well be the most realistic F1 experience you\'ll find. Head to the link I posted to find out more (I\'m too lazy to get the quotes.. ;))

And yeah, they do have the FIA licence.

Ok, so if it\'s so great then, what would you recommend me to do ?
Wait for this game til Nov 23rd and get it or get EA\'s F1 2002 now ? Or get EA\'s F1 2001 at a bargain price ? I\'m not the type
of guy who needs an ultra realistic F1 game though.

hum no idea... I bought the EA\'s F1 Championship Season 2000 and it was a BIG mistake. Fortunately, F1 2001/2002 are a major improvement over the one I bought, but I did hear that it suffers from some minor slowdowns..?!?

Anyway, as of yet, I can only speculate on Grand Prix Challenge and if it will deliever. It has me very tempted though, so I might buy it this friday. If I do, I\'ll surely post my impressions in this thread. :)

300,000 polys a second?  Couldn\'t the PSX do 360,000?  A mistake?  That 1st picture looks good but I\'m pretty sure it won\'t look like that on our TVs, especially after watching that grainy video.

Looks good but I\'m not really interested in F1 games lately.
They could license that engine though.

Not 300,000 per second, 200,000-300,000 on screen (12,000,000-18,000,000 polys/sec).

There\'s a huge difference.
Whatever
