Looking for a Surround Sound Decoder
« on: November 20, 2002, 05:23:53 AM »
Hey Guys,

I\'m looking for a surround sound unit. I really don\'t need to buy a receiver. I have a nice amp for the front speakers and an amp for the rears. I will need an amp for the center and sub so do I need more amps or do I need . . . alright, I\'m confused. It\'s been a while since I have had any type of surround so I am out of the loop. Whatever I buy I want to utilize my amps.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

mm,

I think I am looking in the $500.00 range for price. As for which type, I\'m not sure. I think I have to do some research and decide which format.

I am partial to Denon. Here is a link to a unit I am interested in, but I still want to incorporate my amps.

Hmmm.....most receivers have decoders nowadays....but I\'m not really an audiophile. Videoholic probably knows a co-worker in the sound department.

That Denon looks nice.  Even though they make kickass amps in their receivers I\'m sure it would still function very well as a pre/pro.  One thing you may wanna look for is one that can do Circle Surround 5.1 (CS5.1).  It\'s a neat little format that sounds more flexbile than DPL II.  GT3 sounds awesome in it.

If you can swing it one that comes highly recommended is the Outlaw 950.  It\'s $900 though.

Thanks THX.

Here is my problem. I have a really nice Carver and Adcom amp that I want to utilize in my set-up. I just got back from Tweeter and the Denon 1603 does not have the amp inputs that I need for my system, nor does the 1803. I have to jump up to the Denon AVR-2802 which is $699.00.

I have more decisions to make.

Ok, for Christmas i want an audio setup for my TV!  My DVD player broke as well (dammit) but i still have my PS2 :D  I was wondering if it is possible to get a decent setup for around $600!!  I could probably go more, but I\'d have to chip in for anything more than that.  I have nothing, no speakers receiver, etc.  and I don\'t know what is good.  Please help meeeee. A friend of mine picked up a Cambridge Soundworks complete system that has a DVD built into the receiver, speakers included.

I have to say that it sounded pretty damn good.
