Nintendo Going Harder After Mature Gamers
« on: December 02, 2002, 04:36:33 PM »
The new Nintendo Power magazine is out and with it come some surprises.

Although still largely a fluff magazine, the latest issue has big features on Resident Evil 0, Metroid Prime, and Metroid Fusion.  They also included a "sports" section to hit on numerous basketball, racing, golf, football, etc. games.  And then they included a preview section detailing only mature titles such as Mortal Kombat: DA, Blood Omen 2, Medal of Honor: Frontline, and more.

The magazine also came with a DVD disc (which ironically will no doubt be played on some PS2s and XBoxes) featuring footage of, among other things, Tony Hawk 4, James Bond 007: Nightfire, Phantasy Star Online, Metroid Prime, Metroid Fusion, 1080, F-Zero, Star Wars: Clone Wars, Nascar, Tiger Woods, Beach Spikers, and the T rated Star Fox.

Add in the television spots for both Metroid games, Starfox, BMX XXX, BloodRayne, and Resident Evil 0 and Nintendo is finally earning some of the biggest demographic.

It\'s just too bad Eternal Darkness couldn\'t run out for a new series of commercials.  It would certainly sell more for the holidays and to gamers who just came to Cube and missed it before.  The same for RE1, possibly.

The DVD also includes Super Mario Sunshine, Mario Party 4, Animal Crossing, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, Vexx, Crash Bandicoot, and more.

Nintendo is obviously going for the mature gamers now. Not nearly as hard as MS or Sony, \'course..

Still, Nintendo\'s critics (who should be appearing in this thread any time now) are running out of excuses.

I\'m not one of those critics, but I\'ll post anyway. :)

It\'s really good to finally see Nintendo focus on mature gamers.  There really is no need for them to focus mainly on younger gamers...they already have that audience, and should be able to keep them with franchises like Mario and Pokemon, which appeal to them.  Seeing a focus on the Mature gamers, and more importantly, an influx of mature themed games, is a very welcome change for this long time Nintendo supporter.  Of course, it is coming right as I\'m about to buy a PS2 anyway.  Go figure. :(

running out of excuses? Hardly.. if anything, people who did use this arguement were refering to what Nintendo said and did themselves. Even if Nintendo targets the younger audiance more than others, is it so bad?

Also, just because the Cube has some adult orientated games doesn\'t mean their the new "adult console". The N64 had its fair share aswell and still that image stayed. I respect Nintendo for doing what\'s necessary to be able to compete, but I also think that their image towards the "kiddie" demographic will stay for quite some time.

Nintendo pushes for a family image. Seven, nearly everything you posted is truthful/agreeable IMO.

I was just saying, there are critics out there that think that the Big N is developing games specifically for 5-year-olds.. and they\'re not. Most of their games are enjoyable for people ages 5-105.. but some folks don\'t think so.

That\'s who I was targetting with my "excuses" comment.
