Sincerely, do you think it\'s an intelligent purchase?
« on: December 06, 2002, 01:27:21 PM »
I\'ve been looking for a good digital still camera lately, asking here and there, reading and comparing models. However, I think I\'ve now a winner. It\'s the Canon Powershot 3G of 4 Megapixels, and a price of around $950. Do you think it\'s a good camera? Is it a reliable model or are the reviews overated?

Please, feel free to critise it and tell your opinion (PLEASE!)

It is one of the higher spec models, that\'s for sure.

Well, you can buy right now some models with near 7 Megapixels but the price is also near the sky.

Well I ordered a CAM for £150 ( £120 after discount) and it reaches 1600x1200 with room to expand memory, here is a sample pic. http://www.tombgaming.gaming-fusion.net/~cawtomb/person.jpg
mine is alot cheaper but still has the quality, I wouldn\'t spend that much on a CAM.

I\'ve seen your example pic Heat, and I must say that the price is a reliable buddy in technology: if you buy a cheap product, the quality will be also "light". That example has multiple expostion aberrations and considerable noise problems in 100%.

I would consider to purchase that device. I like to spend the money good. If I have to pay 300$ more for a good product, I\'ll do.

Man, I totally envy you. I want a digital camera for Christmas and I\'m only looking at the ones in the 150-300 dollar price range... All I\'m looking for is to take casual pictures, not any hardcore photography stuff. Anyone can point me in the right direction?

But that cam does what I need, it takes pretty good pics. I\'m not a photographer, the little things dont bother me.

Vapor try to glimpse Sony models, like DSC-P7, that will be around 500$ and it\'s a good camera for novices or non-hardcore users.

Heat, if you\'re happy with the cam and the price, then no problem. congrats. ;)

Well, my parents bought that exact model, and a 256 meg flash card, and they\'ve had no complaints... oh... except one...

The first two cameras they bought got ****ed royally by the wrong type of flash (right flash, bad company), and they had to switch them.  However, when they got the proper card their camera is amazing.  Great optical zoom, and virtually no distortion with the digital zoom.

Looks good but $950? Thats way, waay to high IMO.

Im sure you could find a cheaper one with almost the same quality. We have a Canon IXY something.. The europeean/US name is Canon DIGITAL IXUS 330 and I like it alot.. Its priced at $400 I think.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canong3/

Conclusion - Pros
Excellent resolution, one of the best performances of a four megapixel
Good metering, good tonal balance which maintains shadow detail
Good natural light white balance, strong and balanced colours
Control over cameras internal processing algorithms (saturation, tone, sharpness)
Low noise at ISO 50, not as clean at ISO 100, more sensitive than rated value
Good build quality, better overall design and control layout than the G2
Shooting priority play mode (a half-press of the shutter release always returns to shooting)
Excellent range of manual controls
Good shot-to-shot times, startup time compromised by four second lens extension
Superb fold-out and twist LCD, bright and assisted by anti-reflective coating
Manual focus has magnified loupe and ruler readout
Flexible continuous shooting modes (buffer after processing)
RAW file format maintains 12-bits of data
Ability to turn JPEG shot into RAW during record review
Compact Flash Type I or II and official Microdrive support
Flash hot-shoe, manual flash power, flash sync control (slow / curtain)
Voice annotation feature
Orientation sensor, although JPEG\'s are only tagged not rotated
Built-in ND filter useful for bright outdoor / flash shots
Intervalometer (time lapse)
Excellent night exposures, should allow exposures longer than 15 seconds
AF assist lamp works well
Included Infrared remote control
Superb battery life, the best we\'ve seen of any prosumer digital camera
Excellent included software suite including remote capture software with live viewfinder
Good accessory support (quality wide angle and telephoto lenses, chargers, case)

Conclusion - Cons
Some chromatic aberrations at or around maximum aperture
Noise at ISO 100 worse than the competition
\'Shallow angle jaggies\' visible on resolution chart, although not yet seen in \'every day\' shots
Viewfinder partially obstructed by lens barrel
Control dial doesn\'t work well if rotated too quickly
Average macro performance
No nine-point AiAF as seen in the PowerShot S45
Zoom controller does not have enough steps / multiple zoom speed
Status panel is not backlit
Manual mode limits in relation to combinations of aperture and shutter speed (although better than the G2 and most other prosumer digital cameras)

Thanx guys. FatalXception what do you exactly mean with the flash problem and the card? Do you mean any accesory you bought?

Fastson, that\'s the price in Spain. It seems to be a new model and new models you know... Anyway, if I buy it after the Christmas, I hope the price is drop a little, at least ;)

GmanJoe, thanx for the info. Pros seem to overcome the cons :)

You can get a new olypus 5.5 megapixel for 700 bucks.  Sweet ass camera and Olympus is a much better camera than a canon.
