Car Stereo decisions! Need smart people input!
« on: December 15, 2002, 04:37:51 PM »
For Christmas my parents are getting me a stereo system for my car. I\'ve basically come down to two things here. (let me note that my mom will NEVER buy from ebay or the internet) The best i can find is Diamond Audio M3 6x9" integrated component system w/ 1" aluminum tweeter (model m391i) and Diamond Audio M3 5.25" integrated component system w/ 1" aluminum tweeters (model m351i).

With installation and tax both together costs $508.78. (mind you i live in an area where everything is expensive so i cant get any deal better than that)

This is in a \'96 Civic Coupe with Sony Xplod Blackface headunit.

The other is a 5.25" MB Quart component speaker (model RKC113). The pair is $149.95 on sale. I would still need to find 6x9s if i got those. Installation is not free and tax is not included.

The specs for the Diamond 6x9 are:
Drivers: Tweeter, Midbass
Drivers per Channel: 2
Power Range (watts): 75/150
Impedance (ohms): 4
Sensitivity with w/2.83-V input @ 1 meter (dB SPL): 90
Freq,. Response 42Hz to 20kHz (±3dB)
Woofer Cone Material: Co-Polymer
Tweeter Cone Material: Aluminum
Crossover included

specs for Diamond 5.25 are:
Drivers: Tweeter, Midbass
Drivers per Channel: 2
Power Range (watts): 40/80
Impedance (ohms): 4
Sensitivity with w/2.83-V input @ 1 meter (dB SPL): 90
Freq,. Response 65Hz to 20kHz (±3dB)
Woofer Cone Material: Co-Polymer
Tweeter Cone Material: Aluminum
Crossover included

specs for MB Quart 5.25 are:
Impedance: 4 Ohms
Frequency Response: 50-32k
Sensitivity: 86 dB
Power Range: 40-100 watts
Crossover Freq: 3700Hz Hz

If i were to get 6x9\'s from MB Quart it would be either model DKC169:
Impedance: 4 Ohms
Frequency Response: 39-32k
Sensitivity: 87 dB
Power Range: 60-130 watts
Crossover Freq: 4500Hz Hz
Crossover Slope: 12 dB/octave
Approx. cost: $130 on ePinions.com

or model DTC169:
Impedance: 4 Ohms
Frequency Response: 35-32k
Sensitivity: 87 dB
Power Range: 60-140 watts
Crossover Freq: 4.2k/8k Hz
Crossover Slope: 12 dB/octave
Approx. cost: $140 on ePinions.com

I hope some of you know about this stuff, cause i really have no idea. Which one is best quality, and which is best for the buck.

I know basically nothing so I\'m hoping you guys know something.  Another forum told me to forget about the 6x9\'s and just go for more expensive 5.25"s in the front??  that doesnt really make sense to me.  BTW i already have 2 subwoofers.

I believe you haven\'t stated what headunit you\'re using, or what kind of car this will be installed into.

...smart people input!

What is this suppose to mean?

Besides- why do people spend so much money on a stupid steroe in their car- when all they do is listen to some booming bass going around, just use the one you got. Waste of money.

Well if rock is your choice you need something with a lot of treble in it, with a small hit of bass then???

You guys are ragging on a guy who want a stereo in his car?  How stupid.  Did he mention that he wants to install 4 12\'s?  I don\'t think so.

Go with the diamonds, you will be very happy. I had a set a few years ago before my car got stolen, I was in heaven :) A small amp on them in the future goes a LONG way.

The MB\'s are also a great choice, but for now its probably better that you get the diamonds.

Too much booming bass is when you don\'t spend enough on your stereo.

Anyways, you listen to rock so here goes.

To Drive The 6x9\'s

Alpine - MRP-T130 2/1 Channel Amplifier
* 2/1 Channel Power Amplifier * Max Power 90W x 2 (4 Ohm Stereo) * 240W x 1 (Bridged 4 Ohm) * DC-DC Power Supply * Fully Adjustable Built-in Divider * Mosfet * Multi-Mode * Speaker Level Input * Bass Boost * Bass Engine Ready *

6x9\'s

Pioneer - TS-A6988 6x9 Speakers
* 6 X 9 IMPP/Foam composite cone woofer with butyl rubber edge * 60mm PPTA balanced dome midrange with magnetic fluid and strontium magnet * 42 mm cone tweeter with strontium magnet * Ribbon type super tweeter * CCAW voice coil with glass imide voice coil bobbin * Top/bottom mount * Nominal input power 60W * Maximum Power 300 Watt *  (I have a pair of these myself, wire them up through an amp and as they\'re 4 way remove the need for any extra tweeters).

To drive a sub.

Alpine - MRP-M200 1 Channel Mono Amplifier
* Max Power (EIAJ) 300W x 1 * 14.4V RMS Continuous Power 4ohm * Stereo (0.08% THD) 150W x 1 2ohm; Mono (0.3% THD) 200W x 1 * S/N Ratio 100 dBA * 15Hz Bass Boost * 18dB HP/LP (80Hz) Crossover * 4 Volt Input Capability * STAR Topology * Darlington Bi-Polar Outputs * MOSFET Power Supply * Speaker Level Input * Blue Power LED *

The Sub.

Rockford Fosgate Punch 12" - Doesn\'t really matter which one you go for, if it says it\'ll take the power then just trust them.

Door Speakers

Pioneer - TS-G1355 13cm Speakers
* 13 cm Woofer IMPP Cone * Max. Power 100 W * Nominal Input Power 25 W * Midrange size (ø) 42 mm * Tweeter size (ø) 10 mm *

The only problem with pioneer I\'ve found is that with some of their newer speakers they sound clear but slightly empty when amped. Whenever I pair them with Alpine amps they take on a new sound with a nice healthy midrange without losing the EVIL treble they produce.

Anyway, that\'s what I\'m aiming for at the moment, just with 2 Rockfords instead as Drum\'n\'Bass is my music of choice for the car.

Welcome to the boards.

Oh and that may all seem excessive but you may as well admit that It\'ll only get bigger with time anyway, you installers are all the same!!!
