Need help with wireless networking.
« on: December 28, 2002, 07:41:13 AM »
I have a  new laptop that I am trying to set up a wireless network between it and my old desktop. Basically all I want to do is be able to access the printer which is attached to the desktop.I bought a linksys 2.4 gig wireless access point router and hooked it up. I am able to pickup the internet without a problem on both computers. The desktop is running win 98 2nd. edition, the laptop win xp of course. I know it\'s me not configuering something right but I can\'t seem to get it. BRAIN FREEZE ,hopefully one of you guys can help me out or point me to a link with fairly easy to understand instructions. Thanks in advance

I may be wrong, so don\'t hang me by my nuts.

Go into Network neiberhood ( right click on the icon )
In the tab " Config" click ADD
Select Service
Select File and printer sharing
OK
OK
Restart

Are your computers on the same workgroup?  On 98 go to the control panel and then network.  Click the identification tab and then type in a workgroup name.

On the configuration tab click the file and print sharing button and enable print sharing.

Put the other computer on the same workgroup (not sure how to do it in XP but it should be similar) and enable print sharing also.

On the computer with the printer attached go to the printers folder.  Right click the printer and then click properties.  Go to the sharing tab and share it.

Restart both computers and make sure they can see each other on the network by going to Network Neighborhood (called something else on XP).  Your computers should be listed there.

On the computer you want to print remotely from go to the printer folder and click add printer.  Tell it the printer is on a network and then select the path and do whatever else the wizard asks you to do.

That should be all.  It worked for me though I still can\'t get one computer to print remotely.
