Evolution: a serious mistake
« on: January 11, 2003, 08:32:48 AM »
I just began to read yesterday The secret of the Pyramid, a book written by J.L Arsuaga, a spanish anthropologist, who is the director of Atapuerca\'s research, and whose exposition is now around NY.

The matter is that after reading the introduction (the book is about the evolution of the human being, from monkeys to nowadays) I got the idea that we, humans, and even life is a terrible mistake of the nature. Why? Very easy. Nature had not scheduled to create life, nor animal and vegetal. If you can notice, you are there, in fron of your screen thanx to a big accident. It\'s almost proved (and the scientist\'s community agrees) that life began in a lake, as a result of combination of gases, water, minerals and a ray. So, nature didn\'t want to create life indeed. It was a mistake.

Till now, no life has been discovered in the Universe. We have not visited many planets, but it seems, according to human knowledge, that there isn\'t out of here. And I think: if the Universe is so big, so large, almost infinite (perhaps infinite), why are we the only known life? Is the life a mistake of the nature itself?

What do you think? I don\'t want this thread to become a religion one, but I know it will, so feel free to post yur own opinions.

i doubt we\'re the only life form in the universe.. i mean.. They haven\'t proved it either way..  IMO It\'s more likely we\'re not alone then alone.

The purpose of this universe is to support Life.

And no, we are not alone.

We have found only one solar system which had no life-supportable planets. Imagine all the billions of solar systems out there, out of our reach, out of our sight. It is a mathematical impossibility to claim that none of the solar systems could have life.

Even if we were a mistake, in theory there has to be at least one other mistake - given that Universe is infinite.

We visited only a couple planets, like 8 so chances of finding life on 8 planets are close to nothing. If NASA would develope a super fast rocket, we can get into other star systems and look there. There are trillions of planets (just in our galaxy) and to say there\'s no life on any is ignorant.

I don\'t think it was a mistake, it\'s not like nature was trying not to create life.

More like a coincidence.

And yes, it is a methematical impossibility to claim that there is no other life in the universe, or even in this galaxy for that matter.

not exaxtly

Ever heard of the Drake equation?

Its easy to guess that there is thousands of intellegent civilizations,  and its quite as easy to guess,  as I do,  that there is just one, ours.

It depends on the numbers that you put in the Drake equation.  Number of stars, number of how many planets rotate around the stars that can contain life etc...

There is no \'its a mathematical impossibility\' when it comes to whether there is life in the Universe or not.

The earth would have been alot better if humans never evolved.

I might be very wrong here, but I have to disagree with you, Clowd.

If Space is infinite, and we use the number representing all the planets in the Universe ( we don\'t know that number, of course )it is a mathematical impossibility - given that we use the Drake equation - to not have any other intelligent life-forms out there.

Can I make a question related with this? We are speaking about math formulae and such operations to make a theory about life in Universe. If Universe is infinite, those operations may be positive (regarding the existence of other life). But if the scientists say that Universe is continuosly expanding... how the hell can be it infinite? An infinite thing doesn\'t expand nor contract, it only stays.

I think it\'s naive of scientists to look for evidence of water on planets and use that as speculation for a planet to support life.  Aliens may like to drink rocks and eat oxygen.  You never know.  ;)

Besides, to think we are alone in the Universe is just wrong.  If it turns out to be true, then it\'s an awful waste of space.

And hey, even if it is just a big waste of space, at least it will give us something to do for the next 500 trillion years. ;)
