Novels you would like to see made into movies
« on: January 23, 2003, 10:35:46 AM »
What novels do you think would make great motion pictures?  Here are some of mine:

Replay by Ken Grimwood.  Actually it was supposed to be in production with Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts, but I haven\'t heard much lately.  The project may have fallen apart.
Foundation and so on by Isaac Asimov.  Actually I wish they would start with the Robot Novels and produce everything as motion pictures.  However, since the word "Foundation" is the cornerstone of this franchise, they would probably have to start in the middle of the story.  :(
I Am Legend by Richard Matheson.  Many of his other stories have been filmed, but this one is probably too dark and depressing to make a conventional horror film.
Necroscope and so on by Brian Lumley.  I think these would make excellent movies.
A Matter for Men and the other War Against the Chtorr novels by David Gerrold
Sundiver and so on by David Brin
The Weatherman by Steve Thayer
I wish someone would make one more GREAT Vietnam war movie based on one of the truly great novels that haven\'t been adapted yet.  I\'m talking about Close Quarters by Larry Heinemann, or Going After Cacciato by Tim O\'Brien, or The 13th Valley by John Del Vecchio.

The Hobbit - or there and back again
by J.R.R. Tolkien

After the initial succession of the Lord of the Rings -trilogy, turning the Hobbit into a full-lenght movie would be a very wise decision.

Jackson hasn\'t replied with a \'yes\' or \'nay\' yet. When asked about the possibility of the Hobbit becoming a movie, he has been very uncertain - although leaning towards \'yes\' more than \'nay\'.

I\'d love to see it happen.

Great topic!  Unfortunately for the topic the one I was most hoping for is already out... LOTR ;)

I always wanted to see Red Storm Rising.

The Difference Engine
by William Gibson, Bruce Sterling

A collaborative novel from the premier cyberpunk authors, William Gibson and Bruce Sterling. Part detective story, part historical thriller, The Difference Engine takes us not forward but back, to an imagined 1885: the Industrial Revolution is in full and inexorable swing, powered by steam-driven, cybernetic engines. Charles Babbage perfects his Analytical Engine, and the computer age arrives a century ahead of its time.

this book is the one that the old Amiga game “the chaos engine” was based on.

Yes, Snow Crash was an awesome novel, though I enjoyed Cryptonomicon more.  I think Snow Crash suffers from the same disability that all those so-called "Cyberpunk" novels do when it comes to movie adaptation.  It\'s a difficult pitch, guaranteed expensive production, and uncertain track record with audiences.  I don\'t think this one will ever get made.

Any one of Frank Peretti’s books. The only problem is that the movies would have to be rated R for the violence as depicted by the spiritual warfare.

I agree that it would be cool to see Snow Crash as a movie, however unlikely.

I\'d also like to see Michael Crichton\'s Timeline made into a movie.

Frederick Pohl\'s Gateway

I am quite a Sci/Fi -nut myself - and I read such authors as Pohl, Dick and Asimov frequently. Pohl\'s Gateway - one of the greatest SF novels I have ever read - would make a great off-stream movie if made with love.

I am now very intrigued about Neal Stephenson and his work. I love cyberpunk, and \'thus I will have to check the local library tomorrow...

I just thought of another.  Someone should film one or more of Michael Moorcock\'s "Eternal Champion" stories.  Of course the most famous is the Elric of Melnibone stories.  Those are cool, but to me they are not really the best.  I think I would prefer the Hawkmoon / Count Brass stories.  Ah well, no one would ever go see those movies.  :(
