The way I counter act not knowing the melody is to download the song, and read the tabs while listening to the song.

then I just whale on the strings, I\'m all like jug jigga jug jigga jug jigga jahjah, jigdy jug jigga juj, jugjug.

Same here you can adjust the tempo so if your a shitty beginner like me its easier to pick up a song. And unlike ordinary tab the it\'s easier to pick up how a song should be played because you can hear how long a note should be held.
