A pledge for safe gun use
January 28, 2003
J. MICHAEL KELLY
OUTDOORS WRITER
Responsible firearms owners were lining up to take the pledge over the weekend.
The "Gun Owner\'s Safety Pledge" was available for signing at the Onondaga County Federation of Sportsmen\'s Clubs exhibit at the Northeastern Sport Show, which ran Friday through Sunday at the New York State Fairgrounds.
Printed and distributed by the Onondaga County Citizens Task Force on Gun Safety, the document reads as follows.
"To ensure that I am not the cause of anyone being harmed by my gun(s), I pledge the following:
I have taken or will take a certified course in gun safety.
I will store my guns and ammunition in an approved manner, such as with a gun safety lock or gun safe.
I recognize that children of all ages are naturally curious and will play with guns. Therefore, I will make sure that all children who enter my house will be safe from accidental injury."
Prominently displayed on the pledge sheet is the slogan of the National Rifle Association\'s child-oriented Eddie Eagle safety program, "If you see a gun, STOP. Don\'t touch! Leave the area. Tell an adult."
