Nuclear-powered NASA Mars Mission Possible by 2010

Betterhumans Staff

[Saturday, January 18, 2003] Using a nuclear propulsion system, NASA aims to send astronauts to Mars within eight years.

"We\'re talking about doing something, on a very aggressive schedule, to not only develop the capabilities for nuclear propulsion and power generation, but to have a mission using the new technology within this decade," says senior NASA administrator Sean O\'Keefe.

The Los Angeles Times has reported that US President George Bush will announce the plan, called Project Prometheus, in his State of the Union address on January 28

It would make exploration of Mars and the development of a nuclear propulsion system a US priority.

Such a propulsion system would be more efficient and have greater thrust than traditional systems, allowing astronauts to reach Mars within two months as opposed to the six or seven months it could otherwise take.

If NASA\'s plan moves ahead, the first mission to Mars could be as early as 2010.

That is such a long mission it is hard to believe that nothing would go wrong.  I don\'t think I would do it.  ALthough it would certainly be cool as shit.

Until they are able to create artificial gravity, no I wouldn\'t go.  The length of the trip would cause bone decay from being without gravity.

Let me think, in terms of something being cool one would have to assume that he or she would be coming home to share the experience with others. In this case I think the only thing coming home will be a mayday report. No thanks; I’ll stay here. Maybe they should ask one of the guys from the Backstreet Boys.

Wow that really puts things in perspective.

Have to agree with you on this one project. Sure it would be cool and all. It would be a great adventure to share with others, if you came back alive. I wonder if this could also be develoupment for  nuclear weapons?

my thoughts on the matter is that there is absolutely NO reason for us to travel to mars

the NASA operation is a waste of time, money , and resources

the only conceivable notion i feel the want to do is it so they can say that the US did it first

During the acceleration phase of the trip, the propulsion system will probably be generating more than 1 g for an extended period of time.  For the remainder of the trip, some sort of circular drum could be operated which would generate 1 g for exercise purposes, much like in 2001: A Space Odyssey.  Your concern about artifical gravity is moot.  I\'d be more concerned about prolonged exposure to radiation.

I think the mission would be worthwhile.  There\'s more to life than surviving and paying taxes.  Exploring and spreading our DNA to other worlds is what we\'re supposed to be doing.  I\'d volunteer, but they probably wouldn\'t take me.

Hell yeah I would go! On the second mission, of course. After they work all the bugs out and people have been there and back.
